Yorktown Heights FD operates as Department 253 in Battalion 17 of Westchester County. Responding to approximately 700 fire calls annually, YHFD responds to a variety of incidents, including but not limited to: structure fires, vehicle fires, fire alarms, inside/outside smoke investigations, gas leaks, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle extrications, and CO alarms. The YHFD also has a Special Operations Division that Responds out of Station 2 and is home to the F.A.S.T. (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) and the Water Rescue Unit and Dive Team. YHFD operates with 5 Engines, 1 Ladder, 1 Tanker, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Mini- Attack, 1 Dive/Water Rescue Unit, and 3 Marine Units. Commerce Street Fire Station

**First Due- MVA w/minor pin**

At 08:06hrs this morning, September 9th. Yorktown Heights Fire along with Yorktown EMS were dispatched to the intersection of Underhill Ave and Croton Lake Rd (NYS Route 129) for a motor vehicle accident with possible entrapment.

Car 2532, Engine 272 and Rescue 16 responded and arrived to find a two vehicle accident at the intersection.

Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters secured both vehicles and removed the drivers door of one vehicle to provide EMS access for patient care and extrication. One patient was transported to an area trauma center for treatment by Yorktown EMS.

Since the official start of school on Tuesday for our area, we’ve already responded to two motor vehicle accidents during the “morning rush hour” (yesterday morning on the Taconic State Parkway & today on Underhill Avenue). We know that it will take a little time for everyone to get back into the swing of things after the summer months. But, when you pack your kids bags and lunches for school, we ask that the adults pack their patience and common sense.

We understand nobody likes sitting in traffic. However, speeding past an emergency scene, aggressive driving and even tailgating emergency vehicles down the shoulder to bypass a traffic jam puts everyone on the roadway including our members and other first responders operating at risk.

Irrational decisions often fail to give the best results. Arrive safe, Arrive Alive.

Kudos to our Car 2531 (Chief of Dept.)

While Yorktown Heights Volunteer firefighters were returning from a motor vehicle accident on the Taconic State Parkway a few days ago, he noticed a disabled motorist struggling to change a tire on the side of the parkway.

Car 2531 pulled over to shield the occupants from passing traffic and then swapped out the flat tire with a spare so they could safely make it to their destination.

Great job Chief!

**First Due- Auto Fire & 2026 Application Deadline ⌛️**

On Monday, August 31st at 07:03hrs. Yorktown Heights FD was dispatched to a reported Auto Fire on the Taconic State Parkway NB in the area of Rt 202.

Car 2533, Engine 272, and Engine 273 responded on the assignment and arrived to find a vehicle fire just prior to FDR State Park.

Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters stretched a hose line and had the fire extinguished in short order without incident.

The YHFD has widely been considered as one of the busiest All Volunteer fire companies in Northern Westchester that does not respond on EMS calls and is the only 100% Volunteer First Responder Agency in the Town of Yorktown.

All applicants must be 18 years of age or older (15-17 for Junior Corps Program) and reside within the Yorktown Heights Fire District or within a neighboring Fire District (which will fall under the discretion of the Fire Chief during the interview process.) Just stop by the Commerce St Fire Station at 1916 Commerce St (the firehouse located in the center of town) before 8pm this evening to hand in 📮 your completed application📋. (The next time we begin accepting applications is January of 2027)

**Auto Fire**

At 12:08AM (0008hrs) on Friday, August 21st. Yorktown Heights Fire was dispatched to the Taconic State Parkway Northbound in the area of Underhill Ave for a vehicle fire.

Car 2532, Engine 272 and Engine 274 responded and arrived to find a well involved full-sized pick up truck just south of the Underhill Ave exit ramp.

Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters deployed a handline to quickly extinguished bulk of the fire and later transitioned over to a foam operation due to a compromised fuel tank.

2 occupants of the vehicle were transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment by Yorktown EMS.

YHFD units remained on scene to assist the tow company with removal of the mild-hybrid vehicle. The scene was later turned over to the New York State Police.

**Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters operate at simultaneous working fires**

Just as a severe thunderstorm was moving through the area on Friday, August 7th, Yorktown Heights Fire was dispatched at 19:07hrs with our Firefighter Assist & Search Team (FAST) and Tanker 14 on the 2nd Alarm to assist the Ossining Fire Department at the scene of a multiple dwelling fire on Hawkes Ave.

Car 2531, Rescue 16 & Tanker 14 responded with just shy of a dozen YHFD members on the assignment. Shortly after arrival. R-16 (FAST) was put to work forcing doors, stretching lines and conducting searches until crews were pulled from the building and moved to an exterior operation as the incident grew to a “4th Alarm +”. Tanker 14 operated as part of the water shuttle working with multiple Tankers from around the area as roughly 75% of the hydrants in Ossining are down for maintenance. YHFD units cleared that scene just after midnight.

While multiple agencies from Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam Counties were already engaged at the multi-alarm fire on Ossining. At 20:33hrs, Yorktown Heights Fire was dispatched with another FASTeam to assist the Lake Mohegan Professional Firefighters Local 2956/Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association at the scene of a house fire on Maqua Pl. Engine 274 with a full crew of 6 YHFD members responded on that assignment. Upon arrival, E-274 was put to work and replaced by another FAST from the USVA-Montrose FD. Engine 274 was tasked with completing vertical ventilation, searches and overhaul. “YHFD FAST 2” operated in Mohegan for just under 2 hours before returning to service.

While two YHFD FASTeams were operating at fires out of town. A 3rd contingent of YHFD Members covered “The Heights” and answered multiple calls for service back in district. At one point over two dozen Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters were operating at simultaneous working fires or incidents back in district.

Car 2531, Rescue 16 as the FASTeam and Tanker 14 are currently operating at a 4th alarm plus fire in Ossining.

Engine 274 is currently operating as the FASTeam at a working fire in the Mohegan Fire District.

Additional Members are standing by in Yorktown to cover additional calls.

Last night, Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters proudly took part in the Yorktown Police Department’sNational Night Out event to support our brothers and sisters in blue.

For those that may not know, “National Night Out” is an annual nationwide event that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, it enhances the relationships between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community spirit.

Your YHFD Volunteers were on hand to provide our neighbors with some fire prevention information and tips, answer questions and accepted a few applications from those interested in joining the YHFD!

*Turn Around - Don't Drown*

Flash flooding, and quiet streams that have turned in fast moving water is occurring across the area. Avoid and do not attempt to drive across any water that is moving across a roadway.

This individual unsuccessfully attempted to forge the river at White Hill Rd and Hunterbrook Rd in Yorktown. Their wagon got swamped, and their supplies were lost.

NOTHING is that important enough to try and get across moving water. This is one of a handful of calls that Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters have already responded to today.
