An excerpt from Bazaar and Entertainment booklet dated Saturday, January 22, 1938:
In the Spring of 1919, a group of citizens of Yorkana and vicinity circulated a petition for the funds to purchase a hand chemical, the cost of which was $325.00. After securing the amount necessary it was purchased by the Borough Council.
The chemical was to be used in the community to protect property. It was kept in temporary quarters for a year. The community felt they should have an organization known as a Fire Company.
On November 9, 1919, they met in the Borough School House, with the officers of Red Lion Fire Company present, to explain the meaning of an organization. With their assistance, an organization was formed known as the Community Volunteer Fire Company of Yorkana. The following officers were elected: President, J. K. Leber; Vice President, C. T. Martin; Secretary, Ray Swartz; Treasurer, John H. Gohn; Foreman, J. D. Ferree, Sr. ; Assistant Foreman, Mervin Crumbling; Chemical Chief, Harry Stein; Assistant Chemical Chief, Morgan Libhert; Trustees, Wm. Sechrist, S. C. Reisinger, H. H. Dietz; Ladderman, Bryan Shellenburger; Chaplain, Rev. J. H. Melch.
In the spring of 1920, they purchased ground and erected thereon a building that was 30X50 feet, the cost being approximately $4,500. Contractor, W. H. Stein & Son.
On December 13, 1921, they purchased a three-tank La France Brockway apparatus, the cost being $4,500.
