Now that the bulk of the summer tourist season is past, Phase 6 of the Nubble Road Capital Improvement Project is resuming this week.
Yesterday, work began with a Wirtgen Pavement Reclaimer grinding up the existing road surface – literally driving down the street and grinding up the old asphalt while in motion. The resulting recycled gravel-like material, “reclaim”, exits out the back of the vehicle where a Grader then spreads and levels it out.
Next, heavy-duty Rollers will compact and smooth out the reclaim to create a solid and smooth road base in preparation for the “hot top” asphalt paving that will take place in the weeks to come.
As with the previous phases of this Capital project, DPW will be removing and replacing all undersized/failing road culverts for better drainage. Additionally, new slip form concrete curbs, new sidewalks and landscaping will be added before complete resurfacing of the roadway.
This construction site is between Sohier Park and the View Point Hotel. Residents who live in the area will have access as well as curbside trash collection and emergency vehicles. Businesses will also remain open during construction.
DPW asks motorists to be aware of work crews and heavy machinery in the area, to expect delays and if possible, to please seek alternate routes around this area during the day. Thank You.

Work continues on the divisional traffic island at the intersection of Beech Ridge Road and Route 1 in York. Crews have removed the former cracked and crumbling structure and have brought in new crushed rock and sand to compact and level the work site area. Next, granite will be used for the border around the island with the middle filled in with asphalt. Lastly, new traffic signs will be installed to replace the old ones. These islands help guide traffic into correct lanes and prevent head-on crashes.
Motorists driving through the area are advised to please be aware of crews and equipment and to follow direction given by flagmen. Thank You.

Last week DPW crews completed work on Young’s Lane to address a reoccurring drainage issue. New culverts were installed to improve water runoff, and the roadway surface has been compacted, leveled and graded. The road is scheduled to be resurfaced with fresh asphalt by Town Contractor, Libby Scott, in the weeks to come.

A big part of DPW’s road maintenance responsibilities includes the highly visible painted road markings York residents drive over every day. Everything from crosswalks and stop bars to directional arrows and bike lane designations fall under our care.
One important marking is the single arrow that points to our catch basins. These arrows help maintenance crews and plow drivers locate drains hidden by snow, leaves or debris.
To create the arrows (and all our road markings), we make templates out of durable yet flexible polyethylene sheets. Each 4’ x 8’ sheet can provide enough material to make several templates and each can be cleaned and used repeatedly over time.
In preparation for our annual catch basin clearing that takes place every fall, new arrow templates were recently made at our Route One facility. York residents should notice refreshed arrows appearing everywhere in the weeks to come.

This week DPW installed a new stop sign at the intersection of Southside Road and Seabury Road.
After checking the site for best visibility, crew members use a weighted, mechanized post driver from our crane truck to drive the signpost securely into the ground. Then, a brand-new stop sign that’s made at our Route One facility was attached.
Another routine installation with minimum traffic disruption with the added benefit of increased traffic safety.

This week, extensive work continues around Winterbrook Drive area with the replacement of old and failing cross culverts. After excavation, the aging metal culverts are removed and replaced with long-lasting plastic culverts.
Additionally, to help improve drainage, heavy equipment is brought in to remove built up sediment and vegetation in and around the ditches. This type of work is critical to ensure proper, year-round drainage and must be completed before future road resurfacing.
Motorists are cautioned to be aware of crews and equipment moving throughout this area into next week.

This week two new International HV-508, six-wheel heavy duty trucks were completed and readied to begin service among the DPW fleet of trucks. When delivered over the winter they were just cabs and open chassis. Since then, dump bodies, wiring harnesses, emergency lights, radios, mechanical sub-systems, as well as custom plow and wing attachments were added.
Each truck is custom built to meet the rugged demands of year-round service. From hauling rocks, dirt and debris in summer to spreading salt and plowing snow in the winter, these trucks are the backbone of DPW service. Both were purchased with the approval by voters in the last two May budget referendums

Just a friendly reminder to York residents…
A permit sticker is required to access the York Transfer Station and Compost Facility located at 65 Witchtrot Road. The cost is $25.00 annually for residents and $100.00 annually for commercial stickers. The Permits are valid from July 1st – June 30th.
The recycling facility accepts: White goods or appliances, Air conditioners, Microwaves, Fire extinguishers, Dehumidifiers, Scrap metal, Waste oil/antifreeze, Leaves, Grass clippings, Brush, Tree wood (no stumps), Lawnmowers, Gas grills, Propane tanks

This week, work crews completed installation of new underground culverts on River Road and Donica Road. These culverts are vital for managing effective drainage from rain and seasonal snow melt and are being installed now before future road resurfacing takes place.
