Kayakers and paddleboaders -- please take a look at these tips to stay safe out on the water! We've had a number of water rescues in the county recently and although the circumstances of those incidents may not be fully known, it's important for those who hang out on the water to be as safe as possible.

Great job to all the rescue teams involved in this! This further punctuates the need to stay safe around water in the summer months. If we as citizens can exercise safety, it will decrease the number of times firefighters/EMS have to put their lives on the line.

YOU MIGHT SEE a low-flying helicopter over York County skies today

From the PA Department of Environmental Protection -- An aerial black fly (gnat) suppression operation is scheduled for Friday, June 12th, 2026, on the Juniata River, Aughwick Creek, Conewago Creek, Conodoguinet Creek, Tuscarora Creek, Sherman Creek, and Swatara Creek. This operation will begin in Adams County at 0700hrs, working upriver to finish in Huntingdon County. This aerial application will include flights in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry, Lebanon, and York Counties. The helicopter will be a Bell OH58 A+ with the tail number N655HA and is red, white, gray, and blue in color.

Helicopter Applicators Inc. will be dispersing Vectobac 12AS, which is a Bti product manufactured by Valent Biosciences. Bti is short for Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, which is a bacterial larvicide, not a chemical, and is the only product used in Pennsylvania's waterways for black fly suppression. Vectobac 12AS is a thick liquid that is brown in color when dispensed from the helicopter. The helicopter will fly low near tree top level and release the Vectobac at various predetermined positions on each stream.

New "Paul Miller's Law" imposes penalties for motorists who hold phones while driving

The law took effect on June 5, 2026.

Harrisburg, PA – Today (5/27/26), in keeping with Governor Shapiro's commitment to safety on Pennsylvania roads, the Shapiro Administration urged drivers to put down the phone while driving, ahead of the June 5 effective date for “Paul Miller’s Law,” which makes it illegal to use a hand-held cell phone while driving.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike), and Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) joined Senator Rosemary Brown and national advocate Eileen Miller to urge drivers to make safe choices behind the wheel.

York County OEM Public Information Officer Ted Czech hadn't given blood since high school -- and that was many years ago -- so he figured it was time. And what better occasion than the first-annual Lt. Dave Godfrey Replenishment Blood Drive at the York County Fairgrounds on Monday.

The process was quick and easy and the best part of all was that Lt. Godfrey stopped by the event!

As many are aware, Lt. Godfrey was the recipient of numerous pints of blood following a deadly shoot-out with an armed man in North Codorus Township on Sept. 17, 2025. Three Northern York County Regional Police Officers were ambushed and murdered by the man and Godfrey was one of two others who returned fire and was shot repeatedly in the process.

The drive was facilitated by the Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank, which covers seven counties, so all the blood donated at this event stays local.

Thanks to Rutter's for donating drinks, Frito-Lay for donating snacks, Morning Sun Market for gift bags and of course, all the donors for their blood!
