York County Solid Waste & Refuse Authority Our mission at the YCSWA is to facilitate responsible solid waste management for York County.

Our goal is to make the disposal of garbage easy while keeping our environment top of mind. The York County Solid Waste and Refuse Authority facilitates responsible solid waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, reuse, recycling and resource recovery. The Authority is the owner of the York County Resource Recovery Center in Manchester Township, PA and owns a

nd monitors the now-closed York County Sanitary Landfill in Hopewell Township. The landfill has been recycled into a community recreation complex and wildlife habitat. The Authority was established in 1971 by the York County Board of Commissioners and operates as an independent, self-supported municipal Authority. Our mission: Facilitate the responsible management of all of York County’s municipal solid waste. We strive to serve the best interests of the citizens of York County in the most economically efficient and environmentally safe manner.

Horn Farm’s 22nd Annual Pawpaw Festival will take place on September 19th and we are excited to be a vendor again this year. Get your pre-purchased tickets today! The Festival will take place from 9 am to 5 pm. Bring your friends and family to learn about Horn Farm and how pawpaw fruit is grown. Visit the food trucks, vendors, buy pawpaws, and stop by our tent to get instructions for making a vermicomposting bin. You can leave with your very own cup of worms to get your bin started.

We hope to see you there!

You wonder if something can be recycled and you are not entirely sure that it can be recycled but you throw it into your recycling bin anyway…that is called WISH-CYCLING. We know you have the best intentions, but when unrecyclable items are taken to the recycling facility, they may cause safety issues for the facility workers if they get caught in a machine. Ultimately, this material is put in the trash and sent to YCSWA’s waste-to-energy facility, the York County Resource Recovery Center.

Wish-cycling does not work for York County. Help out by learning more at www.PennWaste.com or www.ycswa.com.

We frequently get asked how to properly dispose of paints, inks and dyes. There are three easy ways to get rid of these items that you no longer want or need. Here are the options:
• If they are still usable do an internet search for “donate paint/ink/dyes York PA” and you will find organizations that accept donations.
• Dispose of them in the regular garbage. Solidify any remaining paint in the can by adding kitty litter, shredded paper or a commercial paint hardener available at home improvement stores. We recommend that you double bag it to prevent spillage during transport, as well.
• Bring them to the Small Load Drop-Off Area located at the York County Resource Recovery Center.

Visit our website at www.ycswa.com/paint/ for more detailed information.

We were honored to be part of the Roots and Branches Institute which was presented by the South Central Pennsylvania Environmental Literacy HUB. Teachers were given the opportunity to participate in this two-day retreat which focused on bridging the gap between foundational standards and community-wide impact.

A partnership between YCSWA, Red Lion Area High School District 8th grade Science team, and Lower Susquehanna Riverkeepers Association was featured as an example of how school districts can partner with community groups to increase environmental literacy. Participants also visited the York County Resource Recovery Center to tour the waste-to-energy facility and learn how YCSWA uses York County trash as fuel to create electricity.
