It’s unofficially summer! So, here is information on the top three summer items that we receive disposal questions about:

1.POOL CHEMICALS- Materials such as pool/spa chemicals can react strongly with other substances and may cause fires or explosions. Visit www.ycswa.com/services/waste-disposal/household-hazardous-waste/ for detailed instructions for disposal.

2.PROPANE TANKS- Pressurized propane tanks which contain flammable gases cannot be disposed of in your regular trash due to risk of explosion and fire. Information on disposal can be found at www.ycswa.com/gas-tanks/ .

3.AIR CONDITIONER UNITS- Unwanted air conditioner units can be taken to a scrap metal business to be recycled. You can also contact your trash hauler to see if they will take it with your regular trash pick-up or bring it to our Small Load Drop-Off area located at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC). Visit www.ycswa.com/services/household-waste/ for details on hours of operation and fees for the YCRRC.

Envirothon 2026 was one for the books. The temperature was cold but the enthusiasm of the participants brought the warmth. As usual, we were impressed with how much the students know about nature and the environment. And, the creativity expressed with their environment-themed hats knocks our socks off.

We are looking forward to next year’s event!

YCSWA’s Community Services Division has been very busy the past few months providing environmental education through tours and programs. From community groups, classrooms and Cub Scout Troop tours to Science Fairs and library outreach, YCSWA staff are prepared to provide your group with information about how to be a good steward of your trash along with how we at YCSWA manage York County’s trash.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! We appreciate you this week and every other week of the year for displaying patience, commitment, and endurance as you teach the movers and shakers of our future. You’ve not only taught academic lessons to students, you’ve taught them how to be kind, manage their time, keep their cool in stressful situations, and many other practical life lessons.

Congratulations to the winners of YCSWA’s 2026 Earth Day Recycled Contest which was held on April 21st at the York County History Center. Fifty art pieces were submitted for this year’s competition and judging was difficult but necessary.
Here are the winners:

2nd Place—Eden Lloyd and Allyena Sibole, Logos Academy
