August was another busy month for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff’s Traffic Enforcement Team (STET).

Deputies conducted 712 traffic stops, issued 254 citations, made 15 DUI arrests, and 21 additional traffic-related/drug arrests.

A couple of August’s more memorable stops show how traffic enforcement can quickly turn into much more:

🔹 A vehicle was stopped after being clocked at 100 MPH in a posted 35 MPH zone in Dayton. During the investigation, deputies located suspected methamphetamine and an illegally modified rifle. The driver, who was prohibited from possessing a firearm, was arrested on multiple charges.

🔹 Another stop involved a self-described “traveler” who did not believe they were required to register or insure their vehicle. The driver was cited for the applicable violations and the vehicle was towed.

STET has now conducted 4,868 traffic stops year-to-date.

As we move through the holiday weekend, STET and Lyon County Patrol Deputies are out conducting increased traffic enforcement throughout the county.

Joining Forces Pedestrian Campaign
(September 5, 2026 – September 22, 2026 )


The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office – will be joining forces with participating law enforcement agencies in Nevada for a Joining Forces Pedestrian Safety Campaign. The campaign will take place from September 5, 2026 – September 22, 2026.

Nevada had 109 pedestrian fatalities in 2023. This Pedestrian Safety Campaign aims to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible patrols across the State of Nevada with the goal of educating both pedestrians and drivers about road safety.

Pedestrian reminders:

· Walk on sidewalks whenever possible or as far to the side of the road as possible.

· Cross at crosswalks or intersections.

· Between dusk and dawn, wear bright clothing or accessories that can be seen at night.

· Don’t be distracted by your phone, keep your eyes on the road.

Motorists:

· Put the phone down and watch out for pedestrians.

· Driving a few miles over the speed limit might not feel like a big deal, but in a collision with a pedestrian, it can be the difference between life and death.

· Make eye contact with pedestrians waiting to cross the street.

· Take extra care while driving around schools, playgrounds and neighborhoods

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to bringing the number of fatalities on Nevada's roadways to zero through increasing public awareness about the dangers of speeding, driving unrestrained, impaired driving, distracted driving and more. Fentanyl Arrest in Lyon County / Carson City:

On September 5, 2026, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Dayton Patrol deputies assisted the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) with a multi-jurisdictional operation involving the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team (SET).

The investigation began when Dayton Patrol deputies contacted a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Valero gas station in Mound House, Nevada. Deputies located a male driver, later identified as Richard West JR, who appeared to be unconscious in the driver’s seat. West was subsequently determined to be under the influence of fentanyl.

During the investigation, deputies located fentanyl and methamphetamine inside the vehicle. Information developed during the investigation was provided to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office SET team, which led to a hotel room at the Gold Dust, in Carson City. Courtney O’Brien was located in the hotel room where additional fentanyl and methamphetamine were located. Courtney was arrested in connection with the investigation.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office offers its thanks to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office for its continued cooperation and strong working relationship. Joint operations and information sharing between law enforcement agencies remain an important part of addressing the distribution and possession of dangerous controlled substances in our communities.

SCHOOL SAFETY PLANS

Lyon County Schools are back in full swing, but preparation for the school year begins well before school starts. Our school safety efforts begin in the summer and involve working closely with school administrators, teachers, staff, students, parents, emergency responders, and our School Resource Officers to identify potential threats and prepare for a variety of emergencies. Keeping our schools safe takes preparation, partnership, and constant evaluation. We also continually evaluate our plans based on lessons learned, changes in our communities, school needs, and emerging threats.

While we can't give out the specific details, our school safety plan is more than a document sitting in a binder. The plan is law-enforcement-sensitive and only shared in safety meetings with school administrators and first responders. It is a living plan that is regularly reviewed, practiced, evaluated, and improved. When parents send their children to school each day, they should feel confident that safety is our priority. At the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, school safety is something we take seriously every day, not just when an emergency or threat of an emergency occurs.

Effective school safety planning includes:
- Emergency communication and notification
- Response to active threats and other critical incidents
- Fire, evacuation, and reunification procedures
- Medical emergencies
- Severe weather and other natural disasters
- Missing or endangered students
- Identifying and addressing potential threats before they become emergencies

One of the most important components is communication and coordination. When an emergency happens, there is no time to figure out who is responsible for what. Law enforcement, schools, fire, dispatch, and other partners must already understand their roles and be prepared to work together. Our relationships with the school district and fire departments throughout the County have never been stronger.

If you see something concerning, say something. If a student needs help, make sure they know where to turn. If you are a parent, talk with your children about emergency preparedness in an age-appropriate way.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is proud to work alongside our schools and community partners to protect the students, teachers, and staff who make our schools such an important part of Lyon County.

Out of Compliance S*x Offender Arrested in Fernley After Community Tips

Fernley, NV – Over the past several days, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received numerous anonymous tips from members of the public regarding 57-year-old Christopher Gayland Short, a Tier III registered s*x offender.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office S*x Offender Task Force initiated an investigation and determined that Short was registered as working in Lyon County while residing in Sparks, Nevada. During the investigation, task force members also determined that Short had failed to complete a required verification of his s*x offender registration information with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office in July 2026.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. today, members of the S*x Offender Task Force contacted Short at his place of employment in the 700 block of Mull Lane in Fernley. Short was taken into custody without incident.

Short was booked into the Lyon County Jail on one felony count of Violation of S*x Offender Registration Requirements and one felony count related to a violation of the conditions of his parole or probation. He is currently being held without bail.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the community members who took the time to provide information regarding Short’s status and whereabouts. Information provided by the public assisted task force members in locating Short and furthering the investigation. Community involvement continues to be an important part of identifying potential registration violations and promoting public safety.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office S*x Offender Task Force is committed to ensuring that convicted s*x offenders residing, working, or attending school within Lyon County remain in compliance with Nevada’s registration requirements. Through proactive compliance checks, targeted enforcement efforts, and information provided by the public, the Task Force works to promote accountability and enhance public safety throughout Lyon County.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the Carson City Sheriff’s Office 5th Annual K9 Challenge on Saturday, October 3, at Fuji Park. Come cheer on K9 Blady and watch law enforcement K9 teams from across the region put their skills, discipline, and teamwork to the test!

The event is free and open to the public and will feature exciting K9 competitions, live demonstrations, food trucks, refreshments, and exclusive K9 Challenge coins and merchandise.

LCSO Investigation Leads To Arrest of Shooting Suspect in Fernley

Fernley, NV - On August 29, 2026, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Command Patrol deputies responded to the area of a convenience store in the 800 block of East Main Street in Fernley for a report of an armed subject threatening to shoot others and himself.

Witnesses reported the subject was armed with a firearm and making threats before leaving the area in a vehicle. As the vehicle left the scene, multiple gunshots were reportedly fired in the vicinity of the business and nearby gas pumps.

Deputies responded and immediately began an investigation. Evidence was recovered from the scene, and surveillance footage and additional investigative information were obtained that assisted deputies in identifying a suspect and associated vehicle.

On September 1, 2026, deputies located the vehicle in Fernley and subsequently contacted the suspect, identified as Christopher Tyson Serrato, a Fernley resident. As the investigation continued, deputies recovered additional evidence related to the incident.

Based on the evidence developed during the investigation, deputies established probable cause and arrested Serrato. He was booked into the Lyon County Jail on charges including:

• Assault with a Deadly Weapon
• Discharging a Firearm from a Vehicle in a Prohibited or Populated Area
• Discharging a Firearm Where Persons May Be Endangered
• Breach of Peace
• Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm

Serrato’s total bond was set at $53,780.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the cooperation of the witnesses and community members who assisted deputies during this investigation.
