Did you know?

This young peregrine falcon was on her first migration when she injured her shoulder. Thankfully after a bit of R&R at the Raptor Center rehab, she is just about ready to continue her journey. She may fly over 15,000 miles during her first migration! Look up to the sky next time you're outside. You never know what you may see! Want to help other birds on their route, donate to the Raptor Center.

TBT: Scenes from 1974 -- the early days of the Raptor Center. "Big Red," a Red-tailed Hawk and the first bird to stay with us, can be seen here. We've brought in thousands of birds for rehabilitation in the 52 years since these images were taken, and so much has changed in the field of wildlife education over those years. We know now, for example, that our resident birds are safer and more comfortable in an enclosure, rather than tethered to a post right out in the open.

Every one of our educational ambassadors is special. Every one has a story to tell. But our traveling ambassadors leave the biggest hole behind when they leave us. It has taken a bit to write this post because although he was small in stature, the hole left by this guy was about as deep as the grand canyon. Odin was the first bird we went to for the preschool classes. The first bird we thought of for the giant groups. He was bombproof. Never flustered, he often preened his feathers then fell asleep in front of hundreds of onlookers. He seemed to enjoy the attention of visitors and typically sat in the very front of his enclosure showing off his spectacular colors.

Odin was only six years old when he was found dead early Saturday morning a few weeks ago. We don't know what happened. We likely never will. Thank you to all those who loved and supported Odin throughout the years through either annual or lifetime adoptions. Our little man touched thousands of lives and I hope he inspired wildlife enthusiasts everywhere he went.

The Glen Helen Raptor Center's mission in two fold:

🦉 providing compassionate care to sick, injured and orphaned birds of prey in need of medical care (over 200+ every year)

🦅 educating the public about these birds and how we can live in community with the natural world

This work takes an incredible amount of time and passion and we cannot do it alone. Do you have free time to dedicate towards helping with animal care, education, or the myriad of cleaning tasks that may not be glamorous but are certainly life-saving? Do you have the disposition to put the needs of the birds at the forefront? You may be just what we are looking for!

TBT: A 70-year-old image celebrating the start of our Outdoor Education Center, accompanied by its original caption: "Some of the first campers at the new Glen Helen School Camp, land laboratory opened in November enjoyed a geology lesson during their three-day stay in the all-weather camp. Showing the group rock formations were counselors, left to right, Chuck Holtzer and Peter Lentz. The camp occupying 75 acres of the glen were made possible by gifts of more than $60,000 from individuals and foundations interested in outdoor education."

Recently Development Manager, Tracey Tackett, and Outdoor Education Center Director, Robyn Wright, were able to attend the Springfield Foundation 2026 Annual Donor Reception in downtown Springfield. We are thankful for the Foundation’s continued partnership in support of the mission that keeps kids engaged in the natural wonders of the Glen.
