McCoy Elementary Students Get Moving for Better Focus with Move2Learn Mississippi

Students at Jevonne Keller McCoy Elementary School recently participated in a lively and educational event with Coach Calhoun of Move2Learn Mississippi. The program, designed to boost student concentration and academic performance through physical activity, was met with enthusiastic participation from the students and positive feedback from the school administration.

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Coach Calhoun visited the school to lead students in a series of music and movement exercises. The interactive program is based on the Move2Learn initiative, which uses simple movement sequences to help stimulate students' brains, improve coordination, and enhance concentration and sensory processing.

"When kids get to move at school, schools get better," is the core concept of the program. Initially created for children with learning difficulties, Move2Learn now offers its programs to all students, helping schools meet the Mississippi Health Students Act recommendation of 150 minutes of weekly movement.

Coach Calhoun, a graduate of Jackson State University and a former Health/P.E. teacher, brings over 20 years of experience in education. In addition to his work with Move2Learn, he is also a certified basketball referee for organizations like the NCAA and AAU and was named an "Outstanding Citizen" by the city of Jackson.

The Move2Learn initiative is a free resource for teachers and students, created by The Bower Foundation and the Mississippi State Department of Education. The program provides short, five-minute movement breaks to help students refocus, improve behavior, and increase "Time-On-Task" in the classroom. Move2Learn is used globally but was developed specifically for Mississippi's students and teachers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

September 29, 2025

Recently, a group of creative students from Jevonne Keller McCoy Elementary School lent their talents to a meaningful cause by partnering with the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center’s Food Pantry program. These students took on the important task of decorating donation boxes that will be used to collect food and supplies for veterans and their families in need.

Using their artistic flair and imagination, the students transformed plain cardboard boxes into vibrant, eye-catching collection points designed to inspire generosity within the community. Their thoughtful contributions were more than just decorative according to Medical Center CEO Michael Renfrow, the students’ work, “...played a direct role in ensuring Veterans have access to nutritious meals through our monthly Drive-Thru Food Pantries.”

The talented fifth-grade students who participated in this project included Demon Myers, Aiden Little, Terence Walker, Khe’tima Brown, Talayshia Epps, Karman Levy, and Cashmere Lee.

Mr. Renfrow also expressed deep gratitude to district administrators Dr. Tulwana Belcher, Dr. Sharon Brown, Ms. Lakecia Martin, and Ms. Tommisha Johnson for their leadership in organizing and supporting the initiative. “Your leadership and dedication embody the spirit of service that uplifts our entire community,” he said.

The decorated donation boxes will be placed at every entrance of the school building, serving not only as collection points but also as visual reminders of our collective commitment to honoring and supporting those who have served our country.
