Let's show them that AMVETS Members in Maine have hearts the size of Texas!

Fellow AMVETS, AUXILIARY AND SON'S,
The following is from Kerri Roberts from AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 2 in Yarmouth, Maine.

I won a great 50/50 prize at AMVETS 25 in Portland last weekend. I only spent $5 on tickets, but I won a couple hundred bucks. I wanted to find a meaningful way to donate the money to someone else in need.

After seeing the total devastation in Texas following Hurricane Harvey, I decided that the best way thing I could do was to donate to a food bank, shelter, or other cause dedicated to the relief effort. I considered donating to the Red Cross or Feeding Texas, but how can I really know that my meager amount of money will actually go toward someone's individual needs if I donate to a large organization? After thorough research of all of my options, I returned to my home organization and have decided to donate the money to the AMVETS Department of Texas and their efforts to provide Hurricane Harvey Relief to the community members hit hardest by the devastating storm.

I came to this decision after speaking with Stephanie at the Department of Texas today. The AMVETS in Texas are collecting and purchasing household and personal necessity items with the intention of providing community-wide support. They are sending trucks filled with supplies from a staging area at the Department Headquarters in Dallas to one of the AMVETS Posts in Houston. She explained that as more and more people get back into their homes, these needs will actually increase across their community. Additionally, she mentioned that they have two displaced, elderly Veterans on fixed incomes who do not have much family or support. Monetary donations will go towards the purchase and transport of products from Dallas to Houston, as well as to assist the two displaced Veterans - and any others that come forward seeking help.

I am very proud to be an AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary member and want to help our counterparts in Texas in whatever way I can. The AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 2 in Yarmouth has decided to sponsor a fundraising drive to support this relief effort. I am so happy about this that I have decided to donate an additional $300, bringing my personal donation to $500.

My challenge to all AMVETS, Sons of AMVETS, and AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary groups and individual members in Maine is to pool our donations so that we can make one kick-ass, knock-your-socks-off donation to the Department of Texas!

Thank you,
Kerri Roberts
