Possible Water Leak Near 261 Main Street

9:10 PM UPDATE: To make this repair, we will need to isolate a section of Main Street from 242 to 367. Water service will be impacted for customers in that section during the work. We will keep this stretch as short as possible and restore service as soon as the repair is complete. Thanks for your understanding.

5:45 PM UPDATE: We have decided to make this repair tonight rather than waiting until morning. We will have a portable stoplight on site for traffic control, so please expect one-way alternating traffic in that area until the work is complete. Thanks for your patience.

Heads up for anyone traveling on Main Street: we are investigating a potential water leak in front of 261 Main Street. Our operators are on site now, and we have a consultant coming in shortly with leak correlation equipment to help us pinpoint the exact location.

The good news is that the leak is not significant at this time. Because of that, we may hold off on the actual repair until tomorrow morning rather than working in the dark tonight.

When we do make the repair, please expect some traffic impact in that area. There likely is not room to keep two lanes open, so there is a good chance we will have one-way alternating traffic while the work is underway.

Lace up! Skyline Farm's Trail Run/Walk 5K returns Sunday, September 13.

Skyline Farm's Trail Run/Walk 5K is back on Sunday, September 13, 2026 at 9:30 am! The course uses some of the trails on our aquifer property in North Yarmouth, and we're happy to have folks out enjoying them for this event. Proceeds benefit Skyline Farm, a non-profit offering educational and recreational opportunities for all ages, in all seasons. Your registration helps support their programming right here in our community.

Since these trails sit on land that protects our drinking water source, we ask everyone to help us take good care of it: pack out any trash and pick up after your pets. UPDATE – 10:30 AM – East Main Street Water Main Repair
Good news, Yarmouth: the repair is made! Our crew and Storey Brothers found the problem, fixed the main, and the excavation is backfilled. Paving will be starting shortly, and we expect to be fully off site by mid afternoon.

Water service should be minimally impacted, but some customers in the area may have experienced discolored water. Our crew will be flowing a few hydrants to clear that up. If you notice dirty water at your tap, run a cold faucet for a few minutes and it should clear.
Alternating one way traffic remains in place in the work area until we wrap up, so please continue to use caution through the work zone.

Water Main Repair – East Main Street (Route 88) – Friday

Of all the weekends...The Yarmouth Water District has identified a suspected water main leak on the easterly side of East Main Street across from Grist Mill Park, just south of the driveway to 21 East Main Street. This is unplanned emergency work, and unfortunately water main leaks don't check the calendar first. Our crews will be on site with Storey Brothers first thing Friday morning to make the repair.

The east side of East Main Street will be closed in the work area, with alternating one way traffic through the work zone. Traffic control will be in place for the duration of the work. Please plan for delays or use an alternate route if possible, especially with Clam Festival traffic in the mix.

There may be some interruption of water service to nearby customers, but we will not know the extent of the repair, or how long excavation will take, until the main is exposed. We will provide updates as we learn more. Our plan is to pave the excavation before leaving the site, with the goal of having the road buttoned up before the race Saturday morning.

Our goal is simple: get the leak fixed, get the road back together, and get out of your way so everyone can enjoy the festival. Rest assured our crew will be working hard so the only water flowing this weekend is into your lime rickeys.

Water Main Replacement Project Resuming on Route 1 - Starting Monday, July 13

Yarmouth Water District, along with our contractor Gendron & Gendron of Lewiston, will resume our water main replacement project on Route 1 near Day's Crabmeat starting Monday, July 13.

In late May, we worked with MDOT and Gendron & Gendron to replace the section of water main from the Cousins River Bridge (in front of Muddy Rudder) up to Day's entrance. We'll now continue the project from that point to the Delorme intersection.

This project is being driven by MDOT's 2027 plans to reconstruct this section of Route 1, adding a new sidewalk and underdrain. Because the underdrain will be installed in the same location as our existing water main, we're required to relocate our line before their work begins. This was not a project we had planned or budgeted for this year, but it must be completed ahead of MDOT's 2027 construction schedule.

We expect the project to take at least a few months to complete. Drivers should expect some delays, with alternating one-lane traffic at times during construction. Local businesses in the area, including Day's Crabmeat and Muddy Rudder, will remain open throughout construction.

Any water service impacts to nearby customers will be minimal, and we will provide advance notice before any planned interruptions.

Starting this Monday, Yarmouth Water District will be using an automated phone call system as part of our new billing platform.

Phone calls are one of several ways we notify customers with overdue balances, and on average we make 70-100+ of these calls each month.

If your account has an overdue balance, you may receive an automated call that will include your account number, your balance due, and instructions on how to reach us to make a payment.

We attempt to contact customers multiple times before any service interruption occurs, so please don’t be alarmed if you receive a call. If you have questions about your account or need to make payment arrangements, give us a call. We’re always happy to help.

Did you know that a drinking water aquifer can be contaminated not by a major industrial spill, but by the slow, quiet accumulation of everyday small petroleum releases over time? A little gasoline here, a drip of oil there, and sandy soil that moves it all quickly underground.

A landmark USGS study right here in Maine documented exactly that in North Windham, and the outcome was the loss of an entire community's groundwater supply.

Edit 9:00pm We are happy to report that repairs to the water main on Anderson Ave have been completed. Service has been restored and no further interruptions are expected.

The nature of this repair was such that service disruptions should have been minimal for affected customers. However, if you are experiencing any issues with your water service, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly.

Yarmouth Water District crews are currently on site investigating a water main break. Customers on Anderson Street between West Main Street and Deacon Street may be impacted.

During repairs, affected customers could experience lower water pressure and discolored water. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to resolve this as quickly as possible.

You may have seen recent news about the federal government rolling back PFAS drinking water regulations. We want our customers to know what this means for your water.

The short answer: it changes nothing for Yarmouth Water District customers.

Maine passed its own PFAS drinking water law in June 2025 (LD 1326, Maine Public Law Chapter 425) that specifically locked in the stricter April 2024 federal standards and cannot be overridden by federal regulatory changes. Changing Maine's standard would require the Maine Legislature to pass new legislation.

Our most recent compliance testing shows both of our wells with PFAS detections currently meet Maine's existing standard. We are actively working toward the new stricter limits that take effect in 2029, with an engineering study underway and significant state and federal funding secured.
