The Summit Activities Center will be closing the aquatics area on Monday, September 14th, 2026, for cleaning and routine maintenance. The pool is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Saturday, September 19th. Water aerobics classes will resume on Monday, September 21st. We apologize for any inconvenience

Twenty-five years later, the Yankton Fire Department remembers and honors the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

We remember the first responders who ran toward danger, risking their own lives to save others. We remember the rescuers who worked after the attacks, through dust and devastation, to search, recover, and help rebuild – including those who have died from or are currently living with illness and trauma because of their service.

Today we remember and honor their bravery, selflessness, and resilience. We remember. We honor.

To close out the 250th Celebration, The Yankton Holiday Festival of Lights is excited to announce the 2026 event theme......"ALL-AMERICAN CHRISTMAS." The 2026 Holiday Festival of Lights will again feature family activity time, the BIGGEST and BRIGHTEST holiday parade, a fireworks display, hot chocolate kiosk, and the lighting of Riverside Park and the City of Yankton Christmas tree. Time for your business, organization, non-profit, church, group, club or family to start brainstorming your 2026 Yankton Holiday Festival of Lights "ALL-AMERICAN CHRISTMAS" parade float, decked out in Red, White and Blue. Additional details about float registration and schedules will be posted in the coming months.

You must reside in City Limits to vote in the Municipal Election to elect City Commissioners. Before voting, be sure your voter registration is up to date. Voter registration deadline for the November 3rd general election is October 19th.

Take advantage of free drop off for tree trimmings as part of the City of Yankton’s annual effort to improve visibility and safety on city thoroughfares. Tree limbs hanging over city streets and alleys must be trimmed to twelve foot (12’) and ten foot (10’) over sidewalks. Property owners are responsible for trimming trees on their property or any trees growing in the boulevard next to their property. Tree limbs and trimmings can be dropped off at the Transfer Station at 1200 West 23rd Street free of charge at any time throughout the year. Use the main entrance 8:00a.m.-3:45p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday 8:00 a.m.-11:45 a.m., and any other time at the after-hours disposal area just east of the main entrance on 23rd Street.

Tree trimming not only improves visibility for all drivers, but also helps keep the roads clear for emergency and other vehicles. Clear roadways mean that school buses can run routes on time, and snow plows can efficiently clear streets once the snow starts falling.

Chip Sealing September 2026

The City of Yankton Street Department will continue the street seal coat program on Thursday, September 10th, 2026 and should be completed in approximately one day, weather permitting. Streets scheduled for sealing include the following:

Valley Road: From 21st Street to Peninah Street
Jason Way: From Valley Road to Peninah Street

The process will be to oil the road and cover it with 3/8" rock chips. The streets will be closed to traffic during the seal coat process and opened to traffic immediately after the application. After 1 week, the street sweeper will pick up the excess chips that are still loose.

“No Parking” signs will be placed on the streets the day before they are sealed. Please observe these signs and do not park on the streets until the work is done. Please do not blow grass onto the street before the streets are sealed or permit underground irrigation systems to run water onto the streets while the No Parking signs are up. In the event of rain, the process may be postponed. Thank you for your cooperation during this process.
