Today, the Caswell County Health Department family is mourning the loss of a very special friend, colleague, and public health partner, Kim Shelton.
Kim was the school nurse at North Elementary, but to us, she was so much more. She was a trusted partner, a fierce advocate for her students, a caring presence in our community, and someone our entire team loved and respected. Her dedication to the Caswell County School family was evident in everything she did, and her heart for children and families was impossible to miss.
One of the things we will always remember about Kim happened during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. When things were uncertain and difficult for everyone, Kim volunteered to help our team make calls to check on patients who were isolating at home. During one of those calls, a patient mentioned that he was running out of food and could really use a loaf of bread.
Kim didn’t hesitate.
She insisted that we take a little road trip with her to porch-drop a loaf of bread at his home.
It was just a loaf of bread. But it was also so much more than that.
That was Kim. She saw a need, and she found a way to help. She didn’t need recognition, a program, or a title to make a difference. She simply cared—and then she acted.
That same compassion was woven into everything she did for her students, her school, her community, and the many people fortunate enough to work alongside her. We will miss her kindness, her spirit, her humor, her partnership, and that big heart that made her such a special person to so many of us.
Our hearts are with Kim’s family, her friends, her North Elementary family, her fellow school nurse family, and all of the Pandas who were lucky enough to have her in their corner.
Kim leaves behind a legacy of caring that will not soon be forgotten. We are grateful that we had the privilege of knowing her, working alongside her, and calling her our friend.
Rest peacefully, Kim. We will carry your memory—and your example of what it means to care for others—with us.
