Pleased to share a few exciting things from Monday’s board meeting. We approved a new 5 year contract for our amazing Treasurer. We got to honor several clubs and teams, the great careers and years of service of our retiring teachers and staff, and listened to a fantastic presentation by our JROTC program. We also approved the appropriations for next school year with part of that set aside for field trips for all our students.

I want to be clear about my position on the AI policy and the proposal to ban AI in schools. Not only is the proposal impossible to enforce, it is incredibly misinformed, lacks critical thinking, and is frankly embarrassing in the amount of disrespect it shows our teachers.

I serve on the policy committee, and we spent a significant amount of time crafting a thorough AI policy that addresses implementation, training, acceptable use, academic integrity, cheating concerns, and more.

Like it or not, AI is now part of everyday life. Thousands of jobs have already been impacted or lost because of AI, and if we fail to adequately prepare our students now, they will enter the workforce years behind their peers.

I’m sure there will be more to say Monday night. I look forward to the discussion and hearing what research was conducted to reach this proposal.

It has been crazy busy coaching 4 soccer teams and a drone team, getting to flag football practices and some baseball practices. So now I’m catching up on some of the great events I’ve been able to attend over the last few weeks!

The hall of honor dinner was fantastic. It’s a great time to honor some great alumni and raise money for the Xenia Schools Foundation.

I had so much fun coaching one of the drone teams, Wingardium Deliveriosa. They did such a good job and got second in the autonomous challenge, third in the piloted, and top 3 in the model design out of 13 teams.

My oldest competed in the chef challenge placing 2nd!

We also had so much fun playing the mini golf course the XTAR kids built.

Last but not least, a big thank you to the Xenia voters that approved the levy renewal. I appreciated working with the levy committee and the commitment we all had to get the info out for a successful campaign.

The following resolution was inadvertently left off of the agenda for Monday’s meeting. I will be making a motion to add it to the agenda. This is an important first step in returning to paper and pencil learning.

XENIA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

BOARD OF EDUCATION

RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PAPER-BASED ADMINISTRATION OF GRADE 3 OHIO STATE TESTS

WHEREAS, the Xenia Community Schools Board of Education is committed to providing an assessment environment that maximizes student achievement and accurately reflects each student’s knowledge and abilities; and

WHEREAS, Ohio law permits boards of education to select paper-and-pencil administration for third-grade Ohio State Tests in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics; and

WHEREAS, the Board recognizes that students in Grade 3 (typically ages 8–9) benefit from developmentally appropriate assessment practices that reduce excessive screen time, minimize digital fatigue, and support sustained attention and focus; and

WHEREAS, paper-based testing can better align with foundational literacy and numeracy instruction, including handwriting, annotation, and step-by-step problem-solving; and

WHEREAS, the Board seeks to ensure equitable testing conditions for all students, including those with varying levels of technological familiarity and access;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Xenia Community Schools Board of Education hereby authorizes the administration of all Grade 3 Ohio State Tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics using paper-and-pencil format for the 2026–2027 school year; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Superintendent or designee is authorized and directed to take all necessary steps to implement this decision, including coordination with district staff and timely notification to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution shall be submitted to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce no later than May 1, 2026, in accordance with state requirements.

Passed and Adopted this 13th day of April, 2026.

I’m excited to support the First Grade Futures Program! I’ve worked hard with Ethan to make this dream a reality. Today I delivered the language for the school’s version to our legal team with the plan to approve our partnership this summer!

The annual city Easter egg hunt is always one of my favorite events to volunteer at. The weather today was perfect! Thank you to all those that participated and volunteered! We were able to give away over 120 Easter baskets, some bikes for all ages and over 12,000 eggs.
