On April 7, Upward Bound students had the opportunity to hear from a solar system expert about NASA's Artemis II mission.
Guest speaker Francisco Silva, a Solar System Ambassador and Vice President of the Las Vegas Astronomical Society, shared fascinating insights into this historic mission. He explained the logistics of the Artemis II mission, introduced the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft, and highlighted the astronauts’ critical role in ensuring mission success. Students learned many fun facts, including that each astronaut has 43 cups of coffee onboard and that the mascot “Rise” was designed by an eight-year-old.
Each student’s name was submitted to travel to space on an SD card stored under Rise’s hat aboard the Orion spacecraft, giving them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of space exploration history!
