Huckleberry Hill Land & Livestock is the winner of the 2019 Clean Water Farm Award from Wythe County. The farm is located in the Speedwell section of Wythe County. The Miller family own 337 acres of woodland, pasture and cropland and rent an additional 271 acres. They partnered with Big Walker SWCD to install a BMP/CS SL-6 project (Stream Exclusion with Grazing Land Management) which included installing alternative water, cross fencing, and fencing off all water sources to create a natural riparian buffer. The Miller's have put the idea of rotational grazing to work with their herd and have already realized the benefits of the program.

Tavern Acres is the winner of the 2019 Conservation Award for Wythe County. The DeBord's are located in the Rural Retreat section of Wythe County. They own and rent 224 acres of pasture and cropland. They cooperated with Big Walker SWCD on a BMP/CS SL-6 Stream Exclusion with Grazing Land Management project. They installed alternative water, cross fencing for rotational grazing, a stream crossing, and created a riparian forest buffer along a stream on the property. They are using rotational grazing and are seeing the benefits on the land and in the livestock.

Bend of the Creek Farm is the winner of the 2019 Conservation Award in Bland County. The farm is located in the Mechanicsburg section of the county. The Stuart family own and rent 823 acres of pasture, hay and woodland. They cooperated with Big Walker SWCD, FSA and NRCS to participate in the CREP (Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program) and EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentive Program) on their mountain farm consisting of 260 acres. They have utilized these programs to establish riparian buffers, install alternative water sources, and install interior and exclusion fencing. They use rotational grazing practices as a tool to manage their pastures and over seeded legumes to improve the pastures.

Winners of the the 2019 Bland County Clean Water Farm Award is Point Pleasant Angus. The farm is located in the Point Pleasant section of Bland County and is owned and operated by the Shaver family. The farm consists of 361 acres of pasture, crop and woodland. They also own and operate a farm in Blountville TN consisting of 120 acres. The Shaver's partnered with Big Walker SWCD, FSA and NRCS to establish a CREP (Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program) contract on the farm. The project included exclusion fence, establishing a riparian forest buffer to protect the natural spring fed stream on the property, planting over 800 hardwood seedlings, installing a stream crossing for the livestock and adding alternative water sources. The improvements will protect the water quality of the stream and watershed, and preserve the natural resources on the property.

Big Walker SWCD will have free tree seedlings available at the office located at 100 USDA Drive Wytheville, VA 24382 on 6-12-19 and 6-13-19 from 9 am until 4 pm. Trees will be available first come first serve. For more information please call 276-223-3513.

Big Walker SWCD has free trees. Stop by the office and pick up as many as you want while supplies last. Species include: White Pine, Choke Berry, Silver Maple, Swamp Chestnut, Indigo Bush, Sweet Gum, Ninebark, Sawtooth Oak, Willow Oak, Chestnut Oak, Water Oak, Chick Plum, Shellbark Hickory, Hazelnut, Elderberry, Bald Cypress, Alder, White Dogwood, Red Maple, Cherrybark Oak. Trees are located out under the carport.
