Our community is facing a critical shortage of EMTs. Currently, Midland Ambulance Service has only 8 active members. Last year alone, we responded to 119 calls.
We serve multiple towns and a large portion of rural Jones County, including Wildwood by Canton, rural Monmouth, Hale, Center Junction, Onslow, north of Onslow to the Maquoketa River, Wyoming, and south on Hwy 38 to Olin Corners. We also assist Oxford Junction when they are short on volunteers.
The reality is this: we need more volunteers.
If things continue the way they have the past few years, it won’t be long before Midland Ambulance Service can no longer operate. That would mean significantly longer response times, with coverage coming from surrounding communities like Anamosa, Monticello, or Maquoketa. In an emergency, minutes matter — and those extra minutes could directly impact the people we care about most.
We understand this is a big commitment. We all have families, full-time jobs, and responsibilities. The class is long. The work can be challenging and sometimes thankless. But it is also meaningful, necessary, and deeply important to the health and safety of our community.
Our town deserves to have its own ambulance service. We would hate to see it disappear.
Please consider taking an EMT class and joining our team. Your community needs you.
