At 05:05 hrs this morning, Station 34 was dispatched for a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm sounding with no reported symptoms.
34-1 arrived on scene and made contact with the homeowner, who had evacuated the residence along with his wife. The homeowner suspected the furnace as the source of the alarm.
Crews from 34-51 and 34-2 conducted a full check of the structure using a 4-gas meter and confirmed the presence of carbon monoxide, with higher readings noted on the upper floor.
The home was ventilated until CO levels were reduced to zero. The furnace was secured, and the homeowner was advised not to restart the heating system until it is inspected by a qualified service technician.
The homeowner expressed his appreciation to the crews that responded this morning and stated multiple times how thankful he was to have CO detectors on every level of the home and that they were properly maintained. He recognized this situation could have had a much different outcome without them.
This incident is a strong reminder:
✔ Have working CO detectors AND smoke alarms on every level of your home
✔ Install them outside sleeping areas to provide early warning
✔ Test them regularly — they only work if they’re maintained
Take a moment today to check your detectors — it could save your life.
Properly functioning CO detectors saved two of our neighbors this morning.
Units responding: 34-1, 34-2, 34-3, and 34-51.
