At 13:37hrs today Station 34 was dispatched to another utility wire issue. Dispatch information was a tree and wires down in the roadway on South Road. 34-51 arrived on scene to find primary wires down in the roadway and a small fire. 34-12 responded and was returned to quarters. The road was impassable due to a tree down and the fire was quickly contained. Barricades were set up on both sides of the incident and the crew returned to quarters.

34-1, 34-12 and 34-51 responded.

At 18:09hrs Station 34 was dispatched to a brush fire alongside Route 209 near Rustic Hills Road. 34-2 arrived on scene to find an active vegetation fire due to a tree taking down high voltage wires. Due to the wires down and being involved, the crews had to operate cautiously. Crew from 34-12 and 34-51 began to knock down the flanks of the fire away from the high voltage wires. 34-2 requested Orange and Rockland Utilities to expedite their response. Crews knocked down the fire from getting larger. They awaited O&R to arrive on scene to deem it safe to operate and mop up the scene by the wires.

Otisville Fire Company covered our Station with an Engine while we operated at the fire. Huguenot Fire Company Car 2 assisted at the scene. Thank you to all our mutual aid that responded.

34-1, 34-2, 34-12, 34-31, 34-51 and 34-61 responded.

Another daytime training opportunity. Many ask us, when is your drill night? We train all different days and nights. If you’re interested in joining and are hesitant because you work nights. We will always make time to get your training in. Our officers work different shifts and days throughout the week. That allows us the opportunity to train during the day.

One of our firefighters who is beginning his pump training got in some training this afternoon. We worked on pulling up to a scene and supplying an attack line. After flowing some water, we went to one of our small streams to work on drafting.

Last night Wurtsboro Fire Department came by to train on the new bridge mounted dry hydrant system. Pump operators were able to get in some pump time. All firefighters learned how to deploy and stow the system. They also stopped by to take a look at the dry hydrant behind our Station. It was another good night of training and discussion on Tanker fill site tactics.

Thank you for all who came out on a rainy night!

Another driveway address sign in! Over the last several years we have been working to get reflective address signs on our residents’s driveways. We now have over 100 driveways marked. Our volunteer firefighters make the signs in house and we sell them for $15. These signs help emergency services find you during an emergency. They are very helpful to our firefighters to find your driveway at night and inclement weather.

If you live in the Westbrookville Fire Protection District and would like to purchase a sign, please PM us. For our Seniors, we will assist you in placing the sign near your driveway.

At 05:05 hrs this morning, Station 34 was dispatched for a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm sounding with no reported symptoms.

34-1 arrived on scene and made contact with the homeowner, who had evacuated the residence along with his wife. The homeowner suspected the furnace as the source of the alarm.

Crews from 34-51 and 34-2 conducted a full check of the structure using a 4-gas meter and confirmed the presence of carbon monoxide, with higher readings noted on the upper floor.

The home was ventilated until CO levels were reduced to zero. The furnace was secured, and the homeowner was advised not to restart the heating system until it is inspected by a qualified service technician.

The homeowner expressed his appreciation to the crews that responded this morning and stated multiple times how thankful he was to have CO detectors on every level of the home and that they were properly maintained. He recognized this situation could have had a much different outcome without them.

This incident is a strong reminder:
✔ Have working CO detectors AND smoke alarms on every level of your home
✔ Install them outside sleeping areas to provide early warning
✔ Test them regularly — they only work if they’re maintained

Take a moment today to check your detectors — it could save your life.

Properly functioning CO detectors saved two of our neighbors this morning.

Units responding: 34-1, 34-2, 34-3, and 34-51.

Tonight we had another excellent night of multi Department training. Otisville Fire Company and Huguenot Fire Company came by to get trained on our bridge mounted dry hydrants. Our members split up and teamed up with both Departments so we ran operations at both sites. We then picked up and swapped sites so both Departments could see how each hydrant deployed and stowed. We also went through Tanker fill site scenarios at each draft site.

Some newer pump operators got in some good pump time. We had a total of 26 firefighters at tonight’s training! Having members from the different Departments work together is key to a smooth operation at working incidents.

Thank you to the firefighters of both Departments who gave up their night to keep our residents safe!

Tonight the crew headed out to do some pump training. 34-11 established the draft and fed 34-51s automatic fill. FF Louis Tunno began his pump training with Assistant Chief Lattimer. Captain Holmes worked with FF S. Ladd and FF Giraldi on setting up draft and fill operations. Engineer Goellner kept a watchful eye on the crew. Tonight was our truck night and we thank everyone who came out tonight to support a FF beginning pump training.

On Thursday we will have our regular training night with some special guests.

At 18:11 Station 34 was dispatched mutual aid to Orange County to assist the Otisville Fire Company at a working shed and vehicle fire. The request was for our 4 wheel drive Engine and Mini-Pumper. The incident was behind a residence on an unplowed access road. 34-12 and 34-51 were able to make access through 2 feet of snow to the scene. The crew off 34-51 put one F-500 handline in operation. 34-12 supplied 34-51. 34-12 went out to the main road to refill off Otisville’s Tanker and returned to the scene to supply 34-51. Crews assisted with overhaul and were released by Otisville Command.

This is the second working fire our Volunteers have operated at over the last two days. We appreciate their dedication by responding in the severe weather we are having.

34-1, 34-2, 34-3, 34-12 and 34-51 responded.

At 14:26 Station 34 was requested mutual aid to Orange County in the Cuddebackville Fire District for a working structure fire. Upon arrival, the Tanker supplied Huguenot’s Engine. The crew assisted with hose line operations. After the Tanker shuttled 2 loads of water and overhaul was complete, Command released 34-31.

A huge thank you to our Volunteers who came out in the storm to help a neighbor in need.
