This Memorial Day Weekend, Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue responded to:
• 33 rescues
• 9 missing persons located
• 7 minor medical calls
• 270 preventive actions
• 2 mutual aid responses by Jet Ski

This was a reminder that the ocean is powerful, unpredictable, and can become dangerous very quickly.

Throughout the weekend, Red Flags were flown over Wrightsville Beach, indicating life-threatening surf conditions, dangerous rip currents, and a high hazard for anyone entering the water.

Red Flag conditions mean swimmers are strongly discouraged from entering the ocean, and unfortunately, the number of rescues this weekend reflected exactly why those warnings matter.

We are incredibly grateful for the professionalism and quick actions of Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue, along with all assisting agencies, who worked tirelessly to keep the community safe under extremely hazardous conditions.

Please remember:
• Red flags are not suggestions, they are serious safety warnings.
• Rip currents can impact even the strongest swimmers.
• Swim near lifeguards and know the ocean conditions before entering the water.

Thank you to WBOR for your dedication, bravery, and commitment to protecting our community every single day.

🌊Know before you go! If you get caught in a rip current, don’t panic and don’t fight it.

• Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current
• If you can’t escape, float or tread water and wave for help
• Always stay calm, rip currents can pull you away from shore

Stay aware and stay prepared, Wrightsville Beach.

🌊 Rip Currents 101

Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of water that flow away from shore, and they can happen on any beach, any day.

Here’s how to spot one:
🔹 A break in the incoming waves
🔹 Darker, deeper-looking water
🔹 A channel of choppy or rippling water
🔹 Foam or debris moving steadily offshore

If you’re ever unsure, ask a lifeguard before heading in. Your safety starts with awareness.

When in doubt, stay out, and always swim near a lifeguard. 🏖️
