Time continues to fly by!

This week, on Tuesday, I will be away from the office most of the day while we bring a crew of students from area schools in to learn a bit about county level government.

The students will listen to department heads who will give them a brief description of how each part of the Nobles County system works to serve the people of our great county.

The office pace remains fast and I look forward to the opportunity to meet and serve our veterans and their families!

Have a great week!!!

I hope everyone had a blessed Easter, and it was certainly a beautiful day all around.

A reminder that this week I will be in the office on Monday and Friday, though on Friday I will be in around 10:30.

It is time for the Spring Conference, and as my two-year anniversary in the office quickly approaches, I find myself much more comfortable and confident meeting with CVSOs from the southern half of the state.

This past Wednesday I was on with the US95 morning show. I really enjoy working with Radioworks to get the word out in the community. This month I went in to highlight the importance of our younger veterans getting in and establishing their files in my office.

I know that many are spending their time busy with work, spouses, and raising families. But we also need to think of you and your health and condition. We may not have anything to do at this time, but being ready for anything in the future is vital.

Enjoy the week! I hope you all have a great one!!

There is much on the schedule going forward, but today, there is something much more important.

March 29th is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. A day for them was earned with their blood, sweat, and tears on the battlefield and the disrespect they endured when they returned home.

A great man I served with made the point that we were lucky to have served with some of the last active-duty veterans from that war. I couldn't have agreed more, and said my one regret was not taking the time to talk to them more. At the time, I was an early twenties buck sergeant and appreciated them immensely, but just didn't take the time I wish I had.

Now I am in a position to meet many of our Vietnam veterans and hold a position where I can help them. I love talking to all of our veterans, but the Vietnam vets hold a special place with me. They were not honored as young warriors and had to wait decades to be noticed. They served as any other generation, and the ones lucky enough to return home left a part of themselves there.

To all of our Vietnam veterans, Welcome Home!

Vietnam Welcome Home

Welcome home, I heard him say,
Forty years removed from that day.

I stepped off that plane and turned in my gun,
My service over, my sacrifice done.

Nobody was there that cold winter night,
To welcome me home or share in my plight.

Service to country against enemies strong,
Conflict and war, deployments so long.

Not once did I waiver or see my brothers slip,
We busted our tails on that sharp spear’s tip.

We fought like hell while our country complained,
As our bodies were beaten and souls were drained.

We did just as much as generations before,
Our sacrifice was equal to any other war.

But our country did not agree, politicians did not stand,
As we shed our blood on worthless pieces of land.

Tet came and went and we wiped out their forces,
Eliminated their will to fight at its sources.

But the press it told stories made up in back rooms,
Swept away our victories with emotional brooms.

We won the battles every time and we stood strong,
Through a protracted war that lasted too long.

When finally it came time for our war to end,
It was the will of the haters that would never bend.

We were treated like garbage, called terrible names,
The pawns of some nefarious, political games.

It took decades for most to see how we really served,
Heads high with character and rarely unnerved.

Yes our service was noble, our mission was true,
We came and fought for the Red, White, and Blue.

We served our country and paid the cost,
Over 58,000 of our brothers and sisters were lost.

The Vietnam Veteran did exactly as asked,
We did not fail with what we were tasked.

So forty years later, long after that day,
“Welcome Home Brother”, I did hear him say…..

Another week, another season, as last week's blizzard melted (literally) into the history books yesterday. On to this week.

Tomorrow night, I will be attending a Be The One 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline - Community Awareness Event. All of the details are below, and this is a very critical subject, one that is more often than not swept under the carpet. It is uncomfortable and unnerving for people to address, but it is also very real and very tragic.

This goes beyond veterans. The family members of military service members and veterans can also take on a heavy load of their loved one's service to our nation. Police, first responders, EMTs, and firefighters can all be deeply affected by the incidents and accidents they experience during their duties.

This is another opportunity to both learn from others and collaborate on dialing in things we can all do in support of our veterans and local heroes.

Hope to see you there!!

I guess Mother Nature still has a sense of humor. Last Sunday, I emptied the garage and scrubbed the floor, and we all know what it looks like out there today.

Tomorrow morning, we will have a two-hour late start as our tremendous highway department clears the roads and makes them safe for us. (I know those guys!!)

Tuesday night, I will be at Argonne Post 32 in Adrian for the St. Patrick's Day pork chop supper starting at 5:30. I will not be doing a program, but will certainly be available for any questions you may have.

All politics aside, let us never forget the 13 service members lost in the last couple of weeks. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. May God Bless them all.

There is a certain group of veterans I could never do a claim for, even though they earned everything we could give them. They don't talk back or shave, but they certainly carried their weight and more. They happily took on the most dangerous missions and were as loyal as any soldier, sailor, airmen or Marine ever. They even had the ability to soothe their humans soul.

March 13th, K9 Veteran's Day.

Countless lives saved over the years.

I was fortunate to have some great dogs!
