On this day in 1855, the Worcester County Mechanics Association laid the cornerstone of Mechanics Hall with great ceremony!
The formal laying of the stone featured a large celebratory parade of dignitaries through the city. The parade was led by the Boston Brass Band, the Worcester Light Infantry, and the City Guards. The completed hall was eventually dedicated on March 19, 1857.
Following nineteenth-century civic traditions, a sealed copper box was deposited directly into a cavity carved into the underside of the foundation stone. While the capsule still remains sealed within the building's physical structure today, historical records from the Worcester County Mechanics Association detail exactly what the organizers enclosed: association records, local newspapers, coins and currency, city documents, and event ephemera.
