Woodward Fire Department Official Press Release:
WOODWARD, OK – Firefighters continue to battle the "43 Fire," which ignited two days ago in the area of NS 197 and EW 43 under extreme weather conditions. As of mid-day today, the fire has burned approximately 2,200 acres and is 30% contained.
Incident Overview
The fire began on February 17, 2026, at approximately 3:44 PM. A combination of record-breaking heat (82°F), dangerously low humidity (12%), and wind gusts reaching 60 mph created a "perfect storm" for rapid fire development. The blaze moved quickly through areas west of Woodward before entering the city limits. The fire also extended to the east side of Woodward in the area of Hunter Road and Hanks Trail.
Evacuations and Safety
Authorities initiated immediate evacuations for all affected areas. While the fire caused significant concern for residential structures, initial damage assessments are currently underway, and early findings are positive, suggesting fewer losses than initially feared given the fire's volatility.
A Unified Response
The Woodward Fire Department was bolstered by a massive mutual-aid response from across the state. Crews from the following counties played a pivotal role in structural protection and fire suppression:
Blaine, Ellis, Custer, Dewey, Garfield, Woods, Beckham, and Roger Mills as well as other departmens.
"The preservation of many homes and lives over the last 24 hours is a direct result of the seamless coordination between our local crews and our partners from surrounding counties, as well as outstanding work by Woodward Law Enforcement Agencies and City and County Management," said Woodward Fire Chief Mike Wickware. "Their assistance was vital in stopping the spread within city limits."
Looking Ahead
While progress is being made on containment lines, the Woodward Fire Department urges all citizens to remain vigilant. Dry conditions are expected to persist for several days. Residents are asked to:
Avoid any outdoor burning or spark-producing activities.
Respect all remaining road closures to allow emergency vehicles clear access.
Monitor local official channels for updates on evacuation lifts.r
