NWDCS would like to give a huge thank you to the Titus family for their extremely generous donation. With their donation of a vehicle they are helping us to expand our services to be able to reach even more clients in our 10 county coverage area. We love our community and the generosity of so many such as the Titus family. As always thank you all!

May is National Trauma Awareness Month and NWDCS is here to shed some light on trauma.

Day 1: What is trauma informed care?

Trauma informed care means recognizing that many individuals have experienced trauma and then choosing to respond with compassion, safety, and respect. A trauma-informed approach focuses on creating environments where people feel heard, supported, and empowered rather than judged or retraumatized.

Trauma-formed care asks:
“What happened to you?”
Instead of
“What’s wrong with you?”

Final week of SAAM 🩵

Myth: False reports of sexual assault are common.

Fact: False reporting is rare; most sexual assaults go unreported.

•Sexual assault is the MOST underreported crime.
•Approximately 63% are never reported to law enforcement.

-WHY-
•The fear of not being believed.
•Fear of judgement.
•Religious and cultural beliefs.

We can change that by listening, supporting, and taking survivors seriously.

SAAM week 3

MYTH: IF SOMEONE DIDN’T FIGHT BACK, IT WASN’T REALLY ASSAULT.

Fact: Many people experience a “freeze” response during trauma and may be unable to resist.

• The brain and body react to danger in different ways: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.
• Freezing is a common and involuntary survival response.
• Lack of physical resistance does NOT equal consent.
• Understanding trauma responses helps us better support survivors.

The body reacts in different ways to danger, and freezing is a natural survival response-not consent.

Understanding trauma helps us respond with compassion 🩵
