Woodstock Public Library District

Woodstock Public Library District "An open door to knowledge and enjoyment for the whole community." We are part of the Mid Hudson Library System: http://www.midhudson.org

Structure of the Library:
The Woodstock Public Library District was created by Chapter 499 of the Laws of 1989 (New York State). The district is governed by a publicly elected eleven member board of trustees. The term of office is five years. Candidates run at large. The annual election to fill board vacancies is held on the first Thursday in September. Prospective board members must petition for

candidacy. Eligibility to vote in the Library District election is based on eligibility to vote in the Woodstock town elections. History:
The Woodstock Library was established in 1913 in a converted barn. A budget of $40 paid for some bookshelves, a few chairs, and a coal stove; the books were donated.

Join us for another presentation from the World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley as part of their Great Decisions series on Tuesday, May 19th at 4:30pm in the Sussman-Blythe Community Room.

The Gray Zone Dilemma – Irregular Warfare in the South China Sea
Facilitator Michael Hauser for the World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley. Since World War II, the term Irregular Warfare (IW) has become an increasingly common aspect in the study of warfare and statecraft. Comprising concepts such as guerrilla warfare, counterterrorism, unconventional warfare, and counterinsurgency, IW today is seemingly ubiquitous as major powers utilize IW strategy to exploit the “gray zone” between peace and war. This presentation will summarize the scope of IW and focus on the South China Sea as a case study for modern IW.

We celebrated our *official* Grand Opening with a Ribbon-Cutting this past Saturday. Thank you to all our speakers (Congressman Pat Ryan, Ulster County Legislator Jeff Collins, Town Supervisor Anula Courtis, Woodstock Library Board President Barry Miller, and Friends of the Library President Michael Hunt), everyone who attended, everyone who supported this project, everyone who donated, everyone who volunteered, everyone who served on our board past and present, everyone who has ever worked for the Library, and basically everyone who has walked through the doors of this new library to help bring it to life! We had beautiful weather, beautiful music from , delicious cake, and positive vibes all around. Special thanks to Devon Hunt for snapping these photographs of the festivities!

We still have a few seats left for our Junior Forensics Detectives Program this Saturday April 25th at 1pm! This workshop is for students in grades 6 – 8. Our friends from the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum in Poughkeepsie will present this exciting new program: Junior Forensic Detectives! Participants will work together to solve a murder mystery by matching “blood” to see who committed the crime. This lesson delves into the basic biology of blood. They will also learn to understand why learning sciences like biology and chemistry is important.
Registration is REQUIRED; please e-mail hollie@woodstock to reserve a seat.
