OFA Climate Change "Action August" Day of Action
Tell Cong. Randy Hultgren to Stop Denying Climate Change!

Join us in Geneva at 9 a.m. Tuesday to present his "Climate Denier Award" and let him know that the time has come to stop denying - and start trying to take action to curb global warming. This event will be held at Hultgren's office Geneva. You can sign up at https://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/climatechangeactionevent/gsc54k

97% of scientists agree that climate change is real, but too many members of Congress continue to deny the problem or the science behind it. Join our OFA-McHenry Co. volunteers and other Progressives from Kane and Lake Counties at this "Action August" event. It's time for us to stand up, speak up, and draw attention to the climate deniers in Congress - including our own - Randy Hultgren - here in Illinois's 14th District!

OFA-McHenry County says "Happy Birthday, President Obama!"

Several of our volunteers - and some new people, too - came to celebrate the President's birthday at Saturday's Obama Birthday Open House & August planning session, held in downtown Woodstock. A few left before we cut the cake, so there was plenty left for the rest of us! We had a good discussion about implementing Obamacare, shared some printed information, and also made plans for more August events, coming up soon . .

Happy , Everyone!

Celebrate the President's Birthday With OFA!

Organizing for Action (OFA) McHenry County volunteers will host an Obama Birthday Open House & Action Event, this Saturday, Aug. 3, 1:30- 3:30 pm in downtown Woodstock. Help celebrate the President's birthday (one day early), meet our local volunteers and supporters, and learn about the progressive issues we are working on: healthcare, gun violence, climate change, immigration, voting rights, women's issues and more.

And yes, there will be cake! Coffee and ice water will also be provided. If you're interested in positive, progressive policies and politics, please stop by after the Woodstock Farmers' Market to visit with us and learn more.

The OFA Obama Birthday Open House will be held at the ECOmmunity Network office, on the 2nd floor of the downtown Woodstock Square Mall at 110 S. Johnson St., Suite #205. The office is handicapped accessible with an elevator located in the hallway by the rear stairwell.

Can you believe it?! With over 90% of the American people e in favor of sensible gun legislation, the U.S. Senate failed today to pass even this very basic bill - SB649 - the Safe Communities and Safe Schools Act - requiring background checks for gun purchasers.

Who did this? (A roll call graphic is attached) Not our two Illinois Senators - Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Mark Kirk - who both voted "YEA" to support the bill. Senator Durbin has long been a strong advocate for gun violence prevention measures, and his Democratic base knows that we can always count him. For Senator Kirk, it took a measure of political courage to vote in favor of this important bill, against the wishes of some strong Republican opposition.

This Saturday from noon - 1 pm, OFA Illinois is planning a rally outside Senator Kirk's Chicago office to thank him for standing up for principle and voting to help ensure the safety of our citizens, our communities and our country. If you can, please try to come to demonstrate our thanks to Sen. Kirk, as well as Sen. Durbin, for working together and looking past politics to do what is right.

NEWS YOU CAN USE . . . Here is some useful information if you want to let them know what you think. Follow this link to find the Twitter handle for each Senator who voted "no" today on the background check bill.

Remember to keep it concise, heartfelt - and civil, please? (Yes, I know, I know! . Several unflattering adjectives come to my mind, too, and might seem quite apropos, given the provocation. But, as they say, discretion IS the better part of valor, so . . )

The Senate rejected a bipartisan compromise amendment to expand gun background checks on Wednesday, casting a 54 to 46 vote that drew sharp responses from supporters who had seen the measure as a small, significant and viable step forward on gun control.
