The McHenry County Department of Health is encouraging McHenry County residents to prepare and plan for emergencies as part of September’s National Preparedness Month.
Disasters usually happen without warning, changing lives in an instant. They can range from natural disasters like blizzards to man-made disasters like terrorist attacks. Over the past couple of years, the nation has grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, and Illinois has had its own unique set of natural disasters: severe storms, tornadoes and flooding. When an emergency strikes, knowing what to do before, during and after may make all the difference when seconds count.
Being safe and ready is always a good idea, no matter what time of year it is, but MCDH is encouraging people to participate in their own preparedness during NPH. This year’s NPM theme, developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Ready Campaign, is “A Lasting Legacy”, which focuses on protecting oneself and family by preparing for disasters to create a lasting family legacy.
MCDH is encouraging people to build their family legacy in the following ways:
• Prepare Children - Prepare children for emergencies by making sure they know important phone numbers and by speaking with them about preparedness and how they can navigate to safety during a frightening situation.
• Build A Kit - Put together an emergency kit with supplies needed to last for several days: non-perishable food, water, flashlights, radios, batteries, a first aid kit and extra medications.
• Make A Plan - Make a plan and discuss it with friends a family. Consider evacuation routes and any special needs family members may have if a disaster strikes.
• Prepare Pets - Plan for pets by having an updated photo of them in case they get separated, and by building them an emergency kit with medicine they may need, grooming items, identification (collar with an ID or microchip), food and water.
Staff from MCDH’s Emergency Preparedness and Response program are inviting residents to join them at community events throughout McHenry County in September. Staff will be available to answer preparedness questions, share tips and hold trivia games for all ages. The winners will receive prizes that can be used to help build emergency kits. Look for them at the following events:
• McHenry Farmer’s Market – From 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 1, 3400 Pearl Street, McHenry
• Woodstock Farmer’s Market – From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 10, Woodstock Square, 121 W. Van Buren Street, Woodstock
