"Cool as a cucumber" isn't just a saying—it's science! A cucumber's inside can stay up to 20°F cooler than the outside air, even on a hot day. So someone who keeps their cool under pressure really is acting like a cucumber.

Bonus fact: cucumbers have been cultivated for over 3,000 years, likely originating in the foothills near the Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal. They've never been found growing wild—only close wild relatives have turned up there.

Want a successful garden this season? Follow these seven basic rules of edible gardening:

Plant only as much as you can easily maintain.
Create a garden plan before you begin.
Grow fruits and vegetables that produce high yields in the space available.
Plant during the correct season for your crop, and choose varieties suited to your climate zone.
Pick a site with at least 8 hours of full sun a day, and avoid shaded spots.
Prepare, amend, and fertilize your soil as needed.
Harvest fruits, vegetables, and herbs at the right stage of maturity.

Stick to these basics and you'll set your garden up for success!

From backyard vegetable plots to community gardens and orchard rows, Yolo County has a long tradition of growing things — and this week is all about celebrating that.

If you’re getting out in the garden this week, here are a few timely tips for our area:

✅ Check your irrigation — summer heat is here, and your plants’ water needs are climbing. Inspect emitters and adjust your schedule.
✅ Top up your mulch — a few inches of organic mulch under trees and shrubs keeps roots cool and reduces watering needs.
✅ Watch for aphids — a strong spray of water is often all you need. Look for ladybugs and lacewings doing the work for you!

What are you growing this season? Drop a comment or photo below — we love seeing what’s happening in local gardens!
