Here is a picture of our own Engine 191 on scene at the California fire. The crew has been assigned to assist with "mop up." No - this does not involve a bucket and a mop 😀.

Mop-up is a term that means the crew works on extinguishing or removing burning material after a fire has been put out. Some items can hold in heat for days after a fire moves through. If there is any unburned fuel, the residual heat can reignite the fire.

Firefighters seek out potential "hot spots" where things may still be smoldering and use hand tools to pull them apart and then use water to cool it down. Although not as glamorous as fighting the actual fire, this is a critically important task in firefighting.

(Due to confidentiality we/they are not allowed to give location specifics or show any damaged homes.)

Hello there, Woodland Hills (Utah) residents. The link below will take you to a video of a news report regarding the Palisades fire. If you skip to about the 5 1/2 minute mark you will hear our city assistance mentioned by name, along with some other Utah towns. You will also see the rear of our engine on the left. It says "E-191" and has an eagle head on the flag. Way to represent!!

The Palisades Fire flared-up Friday night, heading east toward the 405 Freeway and the Encino area. More evacuation orders have been issued.Subscribe to FOX ...

Here is a photo of our Woodland Hills engine (far right; you can barely see the front end) with other engines in Hesperia, CA on their way to the Palisades fire. Our team is part of three task forces, 15 engines and over 70 firefighters from Utah. Pray for all of their safety and success.

Drafting - The science of "lifting" water from a source into a fire apparatus for use. Drafting can be essential to firefighting when a traditional water source (e.g. a hydrant) is not available or functioning. There are scientific principles involved (it is not just "sucking" water), and our volunteers were applying those principles during training this past week. Lots of work, but it keeps us better prepared to help when needed.

Many of you noticed our firefighters prematurely exiting the Woodland Hills Day parade this morning. The reason for that was there was a call for help. A very large gas line had been cut, and there was risk of a larger problem. Our firefighters responded to provide support and to ensure the ongoing safety of our residents. Always willing and ready to go at a moment's notice.

A few residents noticed our volunteer fire crew out again this week. They are always practicing what they know and learning new skills. This week there was a variety of skills used (thank you Alan for setting it all up!). Here are a few pictures of what they did...

Our city firefighters were out again this past week keeping current on training. We always want to be sure the equipment is working as it should and that our team knows how to best use the resources we have. We had both engines out and used several delivery methods for the water.

And it begins...Wildfire season, that it.

I know I just posted here three days ago, but our crew was called out today to assist with a brush fire in Elk Ridge. This particular fire could have spread very quickly and created a much larger problem without the quick response that kept the fire in check.

You can see how dry the grass already is, and we are not even into July yet! Please, please continue to be hypervigilant in abiding by our fire-related ordinances and help others to do the same. Let's all work together to keep our city safe.

Hello, Residents!

We hope you are enjoying the summer so far. Although we are just at the very beginning of the season, the threat of fire is already present. Some Eagle Mountain residents even had to evacuate recently due to a wildfire. We appreciate all that you do to mitigate the danger around your own property and want to be sure you all have the information you need to stay safe.

As we enter the fire season, we also want to thank you all for your diligence in reporting any possible fire sightings. People often tell us they wonder if they should call 911 to report what may (or may not) be a fire. ALWAYS call if you think there might be smoke or flame somewhere. Our volunteer fire department is more than willing, even anxious, to go out and check out any possible concerns. Better to go out on nothing than to have to try and put out a larger fire due to late reporting.

Also, please remember our fire restrictions (i.e. no open flames), and help your friends and neighbors to remember also. As we help each other with this we will greatly reduce the fire danger to our city and our fellow residents.

Finally, below is a link to the Utah Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (UWRAP) website. The interactive maps allow you to actually put your own address in and see what the risk level in and around your home. We invite you to explore these tools and to make use of the information it provides.

As always, take care of each other, and let us know if you have any questions about mitigating fire issues on your property.

Wildfires continue to threaten people and property across Utah. As the state’s population grows, our communities are rapidly expanding into the wildland urban interface (WUI). Effects from long-term drought and high levels of hazardous fuels accumulation, across the state, present major concerns f...

On May 4th the Woodland Hills Fire Department dedicated the new Engine 191 with a traditional push-in ceremony. The mayor, city council members, and many of our volunteer firefighters were in attendance. The “push-in” ceremony dates back more than 100 years to a time before fire trucks were motorized and were instead pulled by horses. Back then firefighters had to actually push their horse-drawn equipment back into the station after a call. The “push-in” has been modified in current times for safety reasons. The new 40,000 pound vehicle is classified as both a type 1 (structure) and type 3 (wild land) fire truck. Many years of service lie ahead for this great truck!

Once again, our volunteer fire department is preparing to help people under various circumstances. The most recent training was about "ladder extraction." This picture shows a firefighter carrying an unconscious person (in this case, another firefighter) down a ladder while a third person ensures the ladder is stable. It was a great training, and while we hope to never need to do this, we are now prepared to do so!
