My name is Elisabeth “Betsy” Ervin, and I am running to retain a seat on the Woodfin Town Council. In February 2022, the current Town Council selected me to fill an unexpired council term. I am excited to report that I have been an integral part of major changes taking place in our town of over eight thousand residents! We are working toward completion of the Woodfin Greenway and Blueway Project and have opened our Silver Line Park on Riverside Drive. In 2024 we plan to have Taylor’s Wave completed and Riverside Park underway. The 5.5-mile greenway along the banks of the French Broad River and Beaverdam Creek is slated for opening in 2025. As a council we have enacted a Steep Slope Ordinance, addressed issues with increasing numbers of Short-term Rentals, continued work to update our Comprehensive Plan, partnered with local agencies to help Woodfin residents in need, approved the required Stormwater Ordinance, and begun a feasibility study for our aging Town Hall. I represent the Woodfin Town Council on the Land of Sky Regional Council and am also involved in creating a Woodfin Business Association.
Prior to my retirement in late 2014, I was the Deputy Chief U.S. Probation Officer for the Western District of North Carolina. I served on the National Probation Officers Advisory Group to the U.S. Sentencing Commission and the National Pretrial Working Group. I regularly volunteer for the YMCA of Western North Carolina’s Nutrition Program at their mobile markets and serve on the Woodfin YMCA Advisory Board. I serve on the board for the Verner Center for Early Learning, and I volunteer for the monthly Woodfin MANNA Community Market at the Woodfin Community Center. From 2017 until 2023, I worked as the assistant coach for the Asheville High School Swim and Dive Team.
My husband and I have lived in Buncombe County since 1987 and in our current home in Woodfin since 1994.
I am proud of our town and want it to retain the beauty provided by our mountains and the French Broad River. Growth is inevitable, and I will continue to work to maintain our small town feel while keeping the door open for responsible development.
