The Association of the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department

The Association of the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department Being a rural community presents challenges for the Fire Department within their response area. Approximately ninety percent of the town is on well water.

This means there is no municipal water supply system and the department must bring the water with them or develop water sources with in the town. Currently the department has approximately 6200 gallons of water on "wheels". The Fire Department does have access to approximately 32 fire hydrants but they are only located in the Main Street area, which covers approximately 4 square miles. We have 9 f

ire ponds located around town and approximately 150,000 gallons in under ground cisterns. At present, Woodbury requires developers of all new subdivisions (3 homes or more) to install a minimum of one 20,000 gallon cistern within each development to provide water supply in case of fire. This helps the department strategically place water in areas of new development and in turn getting water to areas that may not have a water source close in the past.

The Fire Department Valentine's Day Pancake Breakfast has been cancelled on Sunday Morning due to possible icy conditions.

The Fire department regrets making this decision - but with temperatures predicted to be in the low 20's with rain there may be icy conditions that we just do not want to ask people to come out in of support your local firefighters. The safety of our community is our first priority.

But don't worry - That means Mother's Day will be even more special!!! Just you wait to taste those moth watering pancakes and bacon in May.

Woodbury Firefighters Double as Chefs June 16th - Come and Join in on Fahter's Day.

WOODBURY – Woodbury Volunteer firefighters will host their 43rd annual Fathers Day pancake breakfast at department headquarters on Sunday June 16th The event at 25 Quassuk Rd will run from 7am to 11am with stacks of plain or berry pancakes plus bacon on the side, syrup, coffee, and juice. Prices remain unchanged at $8 for adults or $6 for seniors and children.
Volunteer firefighters are the chefs and servers for the breakfast with an assist from their own families Says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan, “Lots of people from here and nearby come yearly with dad or grandad and the entire family. It’s a happy event and gets whomever cooks at home out of the kitchen. Of course, we’re always ready to drop the spatulas and gear up for a fire or rescue run. We are all neighbors in an emergency at any time of day or night. That’s what we do.”

We will miss our "first" customer - Past Chief Quint, again at this breakfast. But, we are sure he is watching everything we do and keeping us serving up the pancakes .........hot and delicious.

9 Things You May Not Know About Memorial Day

1. Memorial Day and its traditions may have ancient roots.

While the first commemorative Memorial Day events weren’t held in the United States until the late 19th century, the practice of honoring those who have fallen in battle dates back thousands of years. The ancient Greeks and Romans held annual days of remembrance for loved ones (including soldiers) each year, festooning their graves with flowers and holding public festivals and feasts in their honor. In Athens, public funerals for fallen soldiers were held after each battle, with the remains of the dead on display for public mourning before a funeral procession took them to their internment in the Kerameikos, one of the city’s most prestigious cemeteries. One of the first known public tributes to war dead was in 431 B.C., when the Athenian general and statesman Pericles delivered a funeral oration praising the sacrifice and valor of those killed in the Peloponnesian War—a speech that some have compared in tone to Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
