Woolwich Man Sentenced to 65 Years in 2021 Shooting of His Stepfather

Woodbury, NJ –Christian Smith, 28, of Woolwich, was sentenced today to 65 years in State Prison for first-degree murder by the Honorable William Ziegler, J.S.C.

According to documents filed in this case and the evidence presented at trial:

On Oct. 9, 2021, Smith and his stepfather Dennis McKenzie, Jr., were arguing in their home over offensive comments Smith made about the sexuality of McKenzie’s daughter and her friend. Smith’s mother and sister attempted to diffuse the satiation, with his mother putting herself between the two men. As the argument escalated, McKenzie attempted to hit Smith, who then pulled a 9mm handgun from his waistband, held it over his mother and shot McKenzie once in the face and three times in the back.
Smith then disassembled the gun and recorded himself saying “that’s what he gets.”
During a two-week trial, the defense argued that Smith acted in the heat of the moment after the victim referenced abuse the defendant had experienced in past relationships. They also claimed the shooting occurred during a struggle over a gun, alleging several shots were fired accidentally before the defendant gained control of the weapon and continued shooting.
Prosecutors argued that the defendant’s account was inconsistent with the forensic evidence presented at trial.

On Jan. 20, 2026, Smith was found guilty of first-degree murder and second-degree possession of a handgun for unlawful purpose. He must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the defendant’s violent actions and ensures he will be held accountable for taking a life,” Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns said. “I commend the work of the trial team in presenting the evidence in this case and securing a verdict that delivered justice for the victim.”

The State was represented at trial by Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Brook.
Defense Counsel: Logan Terry, Esq. of Cinnaminson, NJ.

Judge Affirms Life Sentence in 1988 Murder Case

Woodbury, NJ – A life sentence for Kenneth Houseknecht, who was convicted in the 1988 murder of 12-year-old Kim Anderson, was reaffirmed by the Honorable Kevin T. Smith today, Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns announced.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in open court:
On April 19, 1988, 14-year-old Houseknecht broke into the Anderson home, where Kim was home alone getting ready for school, with the intention of stealing money. During the incident, Houseknecht brutally attacked the victim, beating and repeatedly stabbing her, resulting in her death.
Houseknecht was charged with murder and was tried as an adult. He was found guilty and, on Sept. 17, 1991, was sentenced to life in prison with 30 years of parole ineligibility.
Houseknecht later applied for resentencing pursuant to State v. Comer, which permits juveniles serving lengthy prison sentences to seek review after 20 years of incarceration.
The court considered testimony from forensic psychological experts for both the State and Defense, as well as statements from the defendant, his family, and the victim’s family.
After considering the evidence and arguments presented by both parties, Judge Smith affirmed the earlier sentence.

“This case involved an extraordinarily violent and senseless crime that devastated a family and community,” Prosecutor Johns said. “We appreciate the court’s careful consideration of all the evidence and testimony presented during the resentencing proceedings and its decision to affirm that the original sentence remains appropriate.”

The State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Michael Mellon.
Defense Counsel: Eric R. Shenkus, Rachel Luban, and Cody Mason
