We’re thrilled to share that Sheila Hawthorne, Homeownership Specialist here at the CDA, was recognized with a prestigious Excellence in Service award by the Minnesota Homeownership Center at its 2026 Annual Conference.

Sheila exemplifies service at its most impactful—combining deep compassion for individual clients with determined advocacy that creates broader change. She takes the time to understand each family’s circumstances and works tirelessly to connect them with meaningful resources.

Sheila also played a supportive role in helping advance homeowner association (HOA) reform. She provided testimony at multiple hearings, provided input on key provisions related to delinquency and HOA foreclosures, tracked the bill throughout the legislative process, and helped foreclosure advisors across the state stay informed.

Kristen Scobie Earns NALHFA’s NextGen in Affordable Housing Award

The Washington County CDA is thrilled to share that Community Development Assistant Director Kristen Scobie has been recognized with the NextGen in Affordable Housing Award from the National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies (NALHFA). This award honors emerging leaders who are already shaping the future of our industry through innovation, collaboration, and commitment to expanding opportunity.

Kristen is a highly effective leader on the CDA’s Community Development team. She is an exceptional communicator, resident-centered in her decision making, adept at problem solving within highly technical and complex situations, and supportive of her team as they continue to develop their own professional skills. “Kristen is an emerging leader whose work consistently demonstrates the creativity, resilience, and courage required to deliver complex affordable housing developments while keeping residents at the center of every decision,” commented CDA Board Chair Temmy Olasimbo.

Finding a safe, affordable home shouldn’t rely on luck or “knowing a friend of a friend.” No matter what you look like, what your gender is, who’s a member of your family, what your last name sounds like — fair housing means an even playing field for all.

Check Out Our Talented Artists for the “What Home Means to Me” Poster Contest this Year

Every year, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) holds a poster contest for kids ages 5-18. Through their artwork, the contestants share thoughts about why home is important to them and the issues impacting their young lives.

The national competition is the culmination of NAHRO member contests held by housing agencies and state- and regional-chapters across the United States. Ultimately, 12 winners from the regional contests will be featured in NAHRO’s “What Home Means to Me” calendar for 2027. We’re thrilled that the artwork from our high school entrant has made it to the regional level!
