The Wood River Drainage and Levee District is responsible for the Operation, Maintenance, Repair, Replacement, and Rehabilitation (OMRR&R) of approximately 22 miles of levee and all appurtenant features.
On May 11, 2026, the District began a rehabilitation project on four existing sluice gate structures. The project includes modifications to the handrails, replacement of access hatch grating, and replacement of the existing sluice gates.
To isolate the gate structures and ensure the safety of contractor personnel, flow is currently being bypassed from an upstream manhole to a downstream manhole using a diesel-driven pump and 8-inch diameter hoses/piping.
Work will continue at “Structure 01” during the week of May 18, 2026, as weather permits. Crews will then move to “Structures 02, 03, and 04.”

The WRDLD crew recently loaded, hauled, and placed approximately 1,500 tons of rip rap near the East Alton No. 1 Pump Station to armor the banks of the impoundment and to stabilize erosion on the peninsula.
