2025 was a great year for Wood Heights. Special thanks to the following for their hard work at our Community market and the Halloween and Christmas parties: Deb Jones, Amy Beth Ulrey, Sally Jones, and Merry Marler. I personally can attest to the tremendous amount of work they put in to make not only our market, but the holiday parties a great success that was enjoyed by many. Also, special thanks to Frank Davitt, past mayor, for his contribution to the parties!
We have made a lot of strides to position Wood Heights for the future. While the water system continues to present challenges, it is in the more-than-capable hands of American Waters who continues to make improvements to bring the service up to standards and expectations. Additionally, the city was able to secure two grants to improve the storm drain system. While it isn’t enough to accomplish all that we want to, it will allow us to make dramatic improvements in the ability to handle the runoff from storms.
We continue to keep our focus on the streets – to the extent we are financially able. For the time being, we continue to attack the worst potholes through a professional service when able. And we will continue to seek grants as and when we are able (we have to work through our current project before we can apply for more).
Secondly, we are seeking ways to increase our tax base. And the best avenue for increasing our tax base is to attract retail businesses to our community. Some of the ways we can do this is by making our community more attractive to new business. Some of our hopes/plans are to clean and improve the logistics of our lake and park. Add playground equipment and a fishing pier/dock. Some of us would like to add a digital sign that can be used to keep our residents better updated and make the city look more modern. And I personally would love to see landowners along the Highway 10 corridor that would like to partner with the city to attract developers and builders that would fit our development plan (available on the city’s website).
We have an election in April, where we will be voting on 2 Alderman positions. And consideration has been given to having a community workday at the lake. I hope that everyone will invest in our community by taking advantage of these opportunities, and offering suggestions on other ways we can improve our community. Let’s continue moving this community forward, working to make it a place where everyone loves to live!
