Welcome to Wonewoc "Edge of the Driftless, Middle of EveryWhere"
The Village of Wonewoc is proud to be introducing a new slogan
What does this mean:
Wonewoc is acknowledging that we are located near the edge of the geologically significant Driftless Area-a region untouched by glaciers of the past- our Village is found amidst beautiful bluffs and valleys in the middle of the midwest.
Playing on the fact that, not only are we near the Middle of the Midwest we are also significantly located at or near the middle of some other important areas, distances, amenities or destinations.
As we already know and will continue to also promote, Wonewoc is the Midpoint of the 400 Trail (that significance and promotion will not go away, but instead become an integral part of this bigger picture)
The Village of Wonewoc's ideal travel location is somewhere along the middle of Wisconsin's `Scenic Highway 33 Tour’' that goes "coast to coast covering circuses, canoes, cow-pies, coulees, and more" from the Mississippi to Lake Michigan. There is information and a website page dedicated to this Scenic (Wisconsin) Highway 33 Tour
Wonewoc just happens to be the half-way point between the famous Midwestern cities of Chicago, Illinois and the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Come upon Wonewoc at approximately mile number 206 of the 412 miles of highway and country roads to find yourself at a great road-trip stop for a quick bite to eat, well-rested overnight stay, or a week away amongst the woods and bluffs.
Have you heard about the in-progress Baraboo River Recreational Corridor following the longest undammed river in the United States? Near the middle of the Corridor, Wonewoc finds itself amongst the Bluff viewing, wildlife, and wildflower spill over from the 400 Trail to the Baraboo River. It's unique to be near the middle of two recreational trails that criss-cross each other multiple times to offer the easy opportunity to pedal and paddle based out of our wonderful Village.
Just like all of our surrounding communities, Wonewoc is Near the Middle (not the center) of the Western Hemisphere at 90.2235° W...only .2235 off from the meridian 90 West line of longitude...again placing us near the middle of a big expanse!
Paying Homage to our Neighboring Communities, Wonewoc is located in the middle of some other great small towns and communities that make up a Significant Rural Destination Area for the Great State of Wisconsin: Plum Valley, Valton, Union Center, Elroy, Hillsboro, LaValle, and our "bigger" communities of Mauston, Reedsburg, New Lisbon, Lyndon Station, Richland Center, Baraboo, and Wisconsin Dells.
When it comes down to it, perhaps the best part, is that the Village of Wonewoc is located In the Middle of a Very Scenic Hill and Valley, Driftless Rural Wisconsin Setting.
Wonewoc remains a village in the middle of several activities, opportunities, diverse outdoor areas, and wonders which we will be working to promote in the coming years.
Wonewoc is in the Midst Of:
Recreation: Canoe, Kayak, Bike, Splash Ponds at Campgrounds, Golf, Horseback Riding, Waterparks, Paintball, UTV/ATV fun, Snowmobile trails, and more!
Restaurants, Bar & Grills, & Taverns: For a Village of roughly 800, we sure are in the middle of a great selection of restaurants and taverns right in our immediate downtown as well as within a 15 rural mile radius!!
The Great Outdoors: A number of lakes with beaches, fishing, kayaking, boating, and more-Dutch Hollow, Lake Redstone, Castle Rock & Petenwell Lake-Parks..to name a few.
Beautiful State and County Parks: Wildcat Mountain, Mirror Lake, Devil's Lake, Bass Hollow, Castle Rock Park, Natural Bridge State Park and others within and hour or less radius
Rural Life, Farmland & Diverse Agriculture: From the traditional family farmers that helped establish and build our communities, to CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture) and Organic Farmers, Wonewoc is a Village in the middle of reputable Wisconsin Farming Traditions, and certainly a destination to observe and interact with farms, crops, animals, and the hearts behind the hard-work of a farmer.
Dark Skies: Being a rural village and not a big city, means that Wonewoc is in the middle of Dark Skies with wide open viewing of brightly shining stars at night that many city dwellers do not get to enjoy every evening, and some of us might even take for granted.
Amish Communities: With greenhouses, handmade crafts, baked goods, and buggies-travel in a few different directions from Wonewoc to find yourself passing a horse-drawn buggy or stopping for some home-made delights.
Wineries, Breweries and Cheese Stores-we even have some "Hidden Valley" driving tours to outline them.
Research & Educational Centers: Aside from our Wonewoc-Center School's Outdoor Learning Area (OLA), Wonewoc is also within and hour of educational centers like the Necedah Wildlife Center, International Crane Foundation, Aldo Leopold Center, Painted Forest Museum, and more
Cultural Icons or Monuments: Wonewoc has the long established Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp, Dode Fisk Circus, Historic Churches, and not far from the Al Ringling Theater, Boorman House, etc
Other Miscellaneous Unique Activities like Ho-Chunk Casino, Circus World Museum, and of course, the Waterpark Capital of the World within a quick valley-viewing drive from Wonderful Wonewoc
Soooo...That's A LOT!! and This leads us to boast Wonewoc as The Middle of EveryWhere
Perhaps you can add something to the list of what we are in the middle of?
(Of course, we are also playing on the joke that when you live in such a small rural community, especially for a long time, and you even have a real "Po-Dunk" to refer to, you may start to feel like you live in the middle of nowhere---we know, we know----but when you take a look at the big picture as outlined above, it really can be viewed quite differently---it's perspective!)
Thanks for reading, spreading the Wonewoc Word, and possibly contributing to other positive things to note about the Village of Wonewoc at the Edge of the Driftless, Middle of EveryWhere!!
