Yesterday’s fire at Extra Space Storage on Olympia Ave highlighted exactly why having two fully staffed ladder companies in the City of Woburn is so important.
For the first time in over a decade, Ladder 2 and Tower 1 operated side-by-side at a 2 alarm fire after Ladder 2 was recently returned to service just over a month ago.
When a large section of rooftop solar panels caught fire at 15 Olympia Ave, crews were able to quickly position both aerial apparatus and place two ladder pipes into operation simultaneously. The rapid application of large-volume water streams helped contain the fire before it could extend into the contents of the structure below.
Prior to Ladder 2 being placed back in service, Woburn would typically have to rely on mutual aid for a second ladder truck, delaying the ability to place another elevated master stream into operation.
This incident serves as a great example of the value, capability, and protection that two full-time ladder companies provide to our community.
Big thanks to our mutual aid partners who aided on a very hot afternoon. We’d also like to thank Bostons Sparks A10 for providing rehab and keeping members cool and hydrated.
