A HUGE SHOUTOUT to the Shawano County Highway Department and the Outagamie County Highway Department for their lifesaving assistance earlier today. Due to the persisting whiteout conditions, blowing snow and drifted over highways, all transfers out of ThedaCare-Shawano Medical Center were put on hold since late last evening. This morning, two patients could wait no longer and we were faced with two life-threatening conditions that needed to get to facilities with higher levels of care, but highways that were nearly impassable. Without hesitation, both Shawano and Outagamie Counties were all-in to help us out. Two ambulances were led by a supervisor plow truck from ThedaCare-Shawano to Bonduel where they were then led by a Shawano County plow truck south on STH 47 to the Shawano/Outagamie County line. Waiting at the line was an Outagamie County Plow truck which then cleared the way for them all the way into the Fox Cities.
It is at times like these when we see these "behind the scenes" agencies really come together and truly make life or death efforts for people they've never met and probably will never know. If you know or see a plow driver, thank them for their service!

Still more to come!

WINTER STORM UPDATE: 511wi.gov shows deteriorating road conditions as a major winter storm moves through Wisconsin. Many roads are snow-covered and slippery, with different conditions depending on your location. Widespread heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain, and poor visibility are expected to be an issue throughout the day. We urge you to avoid travel today if possible.

If you must travel, use extreme caution to keep yourself and others safe:

➡Have an emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, hat, gloves, food, water, flashlight, first aid kit and more.
➡Alert others about your route and expected travel time.
➡Drive appropriately for weather conditions, go slow in ice and snow, don’t take unnecessary risks, don’t follow other vehicles closely.
➡In case of a crash or slide off, stay in the vehicle, turn on the hazards, call 911 and move vehicles out of traffic if possible.

511wi.gov and the 511WI mobile app are great resources to know current road conditions, road closures, traffic incidents and traffic camera views. Stay safe today, Wisconsin.

Please be careful over the weekend! Perhaps consider some activities at home, or at least off the highways. Be safe!
