Three generations + Lee preparing to better serve you. 🚑💙

Verl, Nick, Garret, and Lee recently spent some time practicing placement of a traction splint which is a specialized device used on certain femur fracture calls.

A femur fracture is a break in the thigh bone, which is the largest and strongest bone in the body. These injuries are often extremely painful and can happen during major falls, vehicle accidents, farm incidents, or sports injuries. Because the femur has a large blood supply, these fractures can also lead to serious blood loss and other complications.

A traction splint helps stabilize the injured leg, reduce pain, decrease muscle spasms, and improve alignment during transport to the hospital. Proper training and practice are important so crews can provide fast, effective care when these emergencies happen.

Great job to the entire crew, for continuing to sharpen their skills and train together! 👏

And a special thank you to Darren for being such a great patient during training 😉

Due to some transmission line issues the city experienced a short lived power issue. Luckily nothing substantial was damaged during this outage. We are hearing that as far south as Lafayette lost power.

Thank you public works for your quick mobilization!

We have a few updates about the Splash Pad!

We are almost there, but we still have a few critical steps before the Splash Pad can officially open for use.

The UV light system, which is required under new Minnesota regulations, has been installed but still needs to be calibrated. That process will be completed next week, and the UV system will then be fully functional. After that, we must wait for the State to complete permitting and approval based on health and safety requirements.

There are also several other improvements happening around the Splash Pad area! New grass will be planted, and more than four dozen plants and shrubs are scheduled to be installed within the next two weeks.

The bathrooms are also undergoing renovations. Updates include new flooring, fixtures, freshly painted walls, and new windows to help circulate fresh air during the warm summer months. We also installed a new water heater so sink stations now have warm water available. Fun fact — the water heater was reused from the old ambulance barn! In addition, a new drinking fountain was installed at the north shelter, which is also a state requirement.

Yesterday, the Public Works crew received training on the Splash Pad water recycling system. Public Works staff have also already earned their pool certification certificates required to operate the Splash Pad safely.

With everything currently underway, we are hopeful for an opening during the second or third week of June, when temperatures should also be warm enough for full operation.

We know the community has waited a long time for this project to open, and we truly appreciate everyone’s patience. We just need a few more weeks for final adjustments and to ensure everything is operating safely for everyone to enjoy. In the meantime, check out the rules about the splashpad, it's a good reminder to the community that if we don't follow directions, the splashpad will need additional maintenance and costs.

Yesterday, you may have noticed a larger-than-normal police presence in town. The reason for this was a regional DWI training facilitated by Ga***rd’s very own MN DWI All-Star Officer Kniefel.

Officers participated in in-depth training focused on impaired driving enforcement and best practices for keeping our communities safe. Departments represented in the training included Ga***rd, Winthrop, Gibbon, New Ulm, Le Sueur, Henderson, Hector, Renville County, Le Sueur County and Sibley County.

We appreciate the dedication of all the officers who took part in this important training and their continued commitment to public safety.
