The Winterville Marigold Festival is tomorrow, Saturday May 9th! This event has something for everyone. This will be the first year that I will not be staffing a tent all day long so I'll get to relax and enjoy the festivities. Hope to see you there!

We have a new amenity for the Winterville Firefly Trail.

Huge thanks to ACC for providing it and to Winterville's Public Works department for installing our new bike repair stand near the Depot. It includes the most commonly used bike tools and a tire pump. Get on your bike and ride!

While the US National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia's Extreme Cold Warning expires today, Athens-Clarke County will continue to see low temperatures in the coming days.

ACCGov Emergency Management will open a drop-in warming site in the rear parking lot of First Baptist Church of Athens (355 Pulaski Street) starting at 5:00 PM tonight (Sunday, Feb. 1) through 9:00 AM on Monday, Feb. 2. It will open again at 5:00 PM on Monday, Feb. 2 and will remain open through 9:00 AM on Tues., Feb. 3. It is not an overnight sleeping shelter, but will have warming resources and donated goods available.

Donations for the temporary warming station can be dropped on-site during operating hours.

Ongoing emergency resources and shelters are listed at www.accgov.com/shelter, along with temporary resources. Text ACCSHELTER to 888777 to receive SMS text updates.

*** UPDATE: Sunday, Feb. 1 - 3:17 PM ***

Major roads have improved significantly throughout the day and will continue to improve with the sunny weather, but not as quickly as they would if it weren't so cold.

However, some icy patches and areas remain on roads. Of particular concern still is on secondary roads and shaded areas, especially those with large hills. So avoid those areas when considering routes if you do venture out today.

Refreezing is likely overnight in areas that don't dry up, so in the morning go slow, allow plenty of time to travel, don't follow too closely, and watch for ice and black ice areas.

*** HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS REMAIN ***

As of this morning, many roads and bridges in Athens-Clarke County remain icy and slick. Even if roads look clear, black ice may still be present. Please continue to avoid unnecessary travel.
