On this day in 1953 Captain Ralph S. Parr, with the 4th Fighter -Interceptor Wing, achieved the last air victory of the Korean War when he shot down a II-12 transport plane. This victory also qualified him as the 11th and last double ace of the war with 10 confirmed kills.

On this day in 1909 Orville Wright tested the US Army's first airplane. He and a passenger flew for 1 hour 12 mins and 40 secs over Ft. Myer, Virginia. The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, would pioneer the way in aircraft design and heavier than air flight. With their designs and early prototypes they shaped the way for the US Air Force almost 40 years later.
