American Legion Post 184 Post 184, formed in 1919, is located at 221 N. 1st Ave., Winterset, Iowa, right on the corner of Green St & First.

You can see the Madison County Courthouse a couple of blocks away.

Happy Veterans Day!

This video was made by the students of the Winterset Christian Academy to honor all veterans. Their message to us is: "We are the land of the free because of the brave. Thank you for your service!!"

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi will be shown for free on Monday, November 10 at 7 at the Iowa Theater for Veteran's Day.

This 2016 film follows the true story of members of an elite security team who fight to defend the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. Their bravery and actions saved the life of over 30 Americans.

This film is presented free in honor of Veteran's Day and the Marine Corps birthday.
It is sponsored by a local Marine Veteran.

The Piece Works Quilts of Valor group awarded two American Legion Army veterans at the February post meeting. Nick Leavy is pictured on the left and Henry Putney on the right. We hope their quilts comfort them and keeps them warm when they are wrapped around them.

Nick Leavy
He was drafted into the United States Army in 1967 and inducted in Chicago.

Basic Training was taken at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Advance Training at Fort Gordon, (now Fort Eisenhower), Georgia. His MOS was 72B, Communications Center Specialist.

Nick received a secret clearance and sent to Korea in February of 1968. He was assigned to the 30th Ordnance Company at the Niblo Barracks in Yongsan, Seoul, South Korea. This was a missile base, and he became a clerk in the company headquarters orderly room. Assignments included typing encodes and decoding messages.

In April of 1969 Nick returned stateside to Fort Lewis, Washington and was honorably discharged with the rank of Specialist 5th Class, E-5.

His civilian career was working as a draftsman in Chicago.

Henry Putney
He was drafted into the United States Army in 1972. Induction took place at Fort Des Moines. Basic Training was taken at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Advance Training at Fort Gordon, (now Fort Eisenhower), Georgia for on-the-job training. His MOS was 93B20, Cook.

In March of 1973 Henry deployed overseas and was stationed at the Coffey Barracks, Ludwigsburg, Germany. He was assigned to the 651st Ambulance Company, 30th Medical Brigade of the 7th Army Division. While stationed there he worked as a shift leader in the kitchen.

In October of 1974 Henry returned to Fort Dix, New Jersey and was honorably discharged. His ending rank was Specialist 4th Class, E-4.

His civilian career was with Neumann Brothers Construction as Superintendent for 44 years.
