☀️ Warm Air Does NOT Mean Warm Water 🌊

With air temperatures climbing into the mid 60s to 70s later this week, it may be easy to underestimate the dangers of our current water temperatures.

⚠️ Water temperatures across Sebago Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee, and many smaller lakes and rivers remain only in the mid 50s.

Cold water can quickly lead to hypothermia. When water temperatures are below 60 degrees, a person immersed in the water can lose dexterity within minutes — making even simple tasks extremely difficult.

Anyone using:
🚣 Canoes
🛶 Kayaks
🚤 Small boats

should use extreme caution and plan accordingly before heading out on the water.

💨 Breezy conditions can also create higher waves on larger bodies of water, increasing the risk of overturning boats, canoes, and kayaks.

✅ Paddle smart from the start:
🦺 ALWAYS wear your life jacket!

Please stay safe and enjoy the beautiful weather responsibly.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day, and their courage will never be forgotten.
As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we also take a moment to reflect with gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
From all of us at the Town of Winterport, we extend our deepest appreciation to our fallen heroes and their families. 🇺🇸
