Bella Adlah is a wheelchair dancer, adaptive dance advocate, and co-founder of Hope in Every Beat, an organization that brings adaptive dance, movement, and creative arts programming to children in hospitals and rehabilitation centers across the country.

Her presentation, “There Is No One Way to Dance: Disability, Accessibility & Inclusion in the Performing Arts,” combines her experience as a disabled performer with an interactive conversation about how we can create performing-arts spaces where artists of all abilities are not simply accommodated, but truly included.

Bella shares, “Dance has been part of my life since childhood. After becoming disabled, I had to discover an entirely new way of moving and navigate returning to an art form and industry that was not always designed with disabled performers in mind. Today, I continue to train and perform as a wheelchair dancer, and those experiences have allowed me to see both the barriers disabled artists can encounter and the difference teachers, choreographers, directors, and fellow performers can make when they approach inclusion with openness and creativity.”

During the presentation, we’ll explore topics including accessibility versus true inclusion, adapting movement and choreography without diminishing artistry, assumptions surrounding disabled performers, navigating auditions and professional performing-arts spaces with a disability, and practical ways the next generation of artists and educators can help create a more inclusive industry. The time will include an adaptive movement demonstration and interactive activity, giving students the opportunity to explore how the intention behind movement can be expressed in different ways, followed by an open Q&A.

All students are welcome – no dance experience is necessary to join!
