Summer Reading #4:
The Woman’s Club of Winter Haven isn’t just history—it is where Winter Haven’s history is preserved today. More than a century after clubwomen built a civic legacy of libraries, beautification, and community service, their historic clubhouse remains a living center for preserving our city’s story. It is also the home of the Museum of Winter Haven History, where volunteers continue the clubwomen’s mission of preserving the community’s heritage. Many memories began there, with more to follow.

Summer Reading #3:

Dr. Mary Bell Jewett did not found Winter Haven Hospital, but as a physician and the first president of the Women’s Civic League, she championed public health, sanitation, and community welfare in the years immediately preceding the hospital’s creation. Her leadership helped establish the civic spirit and public-health priorities that made a community hospital possible.

The recipients of our WHHS scholarships this year are Sydney Jordan (far right) and Jasmine Davila-Roberts.

Summer reading post #2:
74 years ago in 1952, the Civic League relinquishes control of the library to the city. The Civic League is now the Woman’s Club of Winter Haven (name change). It began as a lending library in the Wood’s family drugstore, then community minded women from our organization wanted to see it thrive. Today, we still appreciate our lovely public library and affiliates. George L Burr Jr. was the mayor at that time.

GFWC - District 9 Spring Mtg was expertly hosted by Lake Placid today. Kim Burr, President, and Judy McCoy Haun, Treasurer represented Winter Haven. A symbolic display of three butterflies, plants, and angels paid tribute to the memory of three members who will be missed. Feeling incredibly blessed to have participated in the GFWC FL Convention and to hear the inspiring and uplifting messages from GFWC International President Suellen Brazil. Her words were a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we serve with passion and purpose. “Not for Ourselves but for Others”
