I have been approved by the district to start my Eagle Scout Project. I have decided to work with an organization called iamJ3. This organization helps out kids that have been taken into custody through the department of social services in Davidson County. Most times when children have to be removed from their homes because of abuse and neglect it is done very quickly and they are usually unable t
o take any belongings with them. Sometimes they have to wait several hours in the office of the social worker before a placement can be found. IamJ3 provides social workers at the Department of Social Services with “comfort bags” to immediately give those children. The comfort bags are basically a book bag that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, brush or comb, a snack such as Goldfish or chips and a juice box or Gatorade, as well as a coloring book and crayons or pens and a journal, and a small blanket. These comfort bags help the child with basic things they might need right away and something to occupy their time while they are waiting on a placement to be found. 10 to 12 kids are taken into custody in Davidson County each month. It is my goal through my Eagle Scout Project to collect enough items to create 120 comfort bags which would provide enough comfort bags to get them through an entire year. I also hope to make people aware of this agency and the needs of the children they serve. This email is the first step in starting my project. What I would like to know from you guys at this time is the name of the church you regularly attend and if you would be willing to help me out by making an announcement at your home church about my project and then placing a collection box at your church? I am going to collect items for a few weeks then cap it off with one big collection day that I hope to get covered by local tv and radio stations as well as newspapers. I will also be sending out a flyer via social media and would love for everyone to forward and share it so I can get the information out to as many people as possible. On that last collection day I will ask you to bring the items collected at your church then help with assembling the bags. I would love to blow my goal out of the water but I can’t do it without your help. More detailed info will follow with dates and times once I work out how many churches we can cover as a troop and how many of you are willing to help. If you would like more information on the organization I am working with you can read about them at iamJ3.org. I look forward to getting this off the ground and started. Thanks for the support and help !!
