Congratulations to Better Impact, our August Small Business of the Month!

From their downtown Winston-Salem headquarters, Better Impact is helping organizations around the world empower volunteers and strengthen communities. They're also growing right here at home, with several open positions in Winston-Salem.

We're proud to celebrate a company that's making a global impact while investing in our local community.

State of the Economy 2026 filled the Benton Convention Center on Tuesday!

NC Secretary of Commerce Lee Lilley shared his read on North Carolina's economy and the state's approach to growth. Ellis Keifer walked through our economic development picture, including the 3,100 jobs and $839 million in capital investment announced here since 2020, and the work behind those numbers: talent pipeline partnerships with our schools and workforce organizations, new investment coming in, and continued growth from the industries already calling this place home.

We also took time to recognize two things worth celebrating. Scott Wierman received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of North Carolina's most prestigious honors, for a career of extraordinary service to this state and this community. And our Collaboration of the Year Award went to the partners who brought the German Men's National Team's World Cup base camp to Winston-Salem, a group that turned a long shot into a genuine win for this region.

Thank you to our presenting sponsor Allegacy Financial, supporting sponsor Reynolds American Inc., and gold sponsors NC Carolina Core and Truliant Federal Credit Union. And thank you to every member and partner who joined us.

We are so excited for our Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools educators who won our grand prize drawings for Educator Appreciation Day! And in an incredible coincidence, these two teachers are sisters!
M***a Ervin, a teacher at Atkins won a CRUISE 🛳 courtesy of Crossland Homes !! Her sister Maria teaches at Petree Elementary and she won a spa package from Coastal Wellness!

That's just a small look at the incredible support our business community showed our educators as they celebrated the new school year. Thanks to JCPenney at Hanes Mall, educators got back-to-school discounts. Dozens of vendors participated making the day extra special. And many, many more companies donated thousands of dollars in donations and door prizes that made our teachers feel loved and appreciated!

Over the summer, Winston-Salem served as a home away from home for the German Men's National Team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Creating their base camp experience was an ambitious idea that took an entire community.

From the idyllic setting of the historic Graylyn Estate where the team stayed, to the premium conditions of the nearby Spry Stadium at Wake Forest University where they practiced, every aspect of their stay relied on collaboration.

Wake Forest University, Visit Winston-Salem, Greater Winston-Salem Inc., the City of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, Visit North Carolina, and the Economic Development Partnership of NC (just to name a few!) moved in the same direction for over a year working towards one goal (pun intended). Sponsors put real weight behind the effort. Smith Reynolds Airport, local breweries, transportation teams, and production crews handled the hundred details nobody sees on television.

That is what actually made this possible. Not one organization, but hundreds of people who put Winston-Salem's hospitality on display for the world. Thank you for showing them who we are.

To the DFB, thank you for trusting Winston-Salem as your World Cup home. To everyone here who built it, this one belongs to you!

This summer's World Cup united fans around the world and brought us inspiring moments of sportsmanship! Being hosted in North America, it also created unique links between international teams and the US cities hosting them. Several teams utilized college sports facilities as their training grounds. ESPN shares a look at the links between colleges and the teams they hosted, including Wake Forest University.

Messi at Auburn. Germany at Wake Forest. Kansas' love affair with Algeria. Colleges got into the World Cup and also profited from it.
