One of the most common questions we saw after the Burton Street Apartments ribbon cutting was: “How do I apply for affordable housing?”

You can also connect with local housing resources such as ASPIRE, formerly known as Winston-Salem Housing Authority, for information on broader affordable housing programs and services.

Affordable housing remains a priority for Winston-Salem. The Office of Housing Development works to increase affordable housing availability. Affordable housing developments are underway throughout Winston-Salem as part of the City’s 2025-2028 Strategic Plan.

Residents are invited to ask questions and share their opinions during the City Services Expo and Community Conversation on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Robert L. Strickland Center at Forsyth Technical Community College, 2100 Silas Creek Pkwy.

Meet city staff, learn about services the city provides, weigh in on strategic priorities, and together brainstorm solutions for the future of Winston-Salem. Expo opens at 4:30 p.m., with the Community Conversation starting at 5:15 p.m.

Residents are invited to attend the first public input meeting for the Rural Hall Area Plan on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at Rural Hall Town Hall, 423 Bethania-Rural Hall Rd.

The meeting will introduce the planning process and provide opportunities for community members to share ideas about how the area should grow and develop. Attendees can participate in interactive mapping exercises, visit information stations and provide feedback directly to planning staff.

As Winston-Salem continues to grow, Director of Transportation Jeff Fansler sees public transit as a vital connection for residents traveling to work, appointments, and destinations throughout the city.

WSTA recently rolled out improvements including more frequent service on key routes, more direct trips, and two new crosstown routes.

Labor Day is almost here! 🇺🇸

City offices will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

📞 CityLink 311 will not be staffed, but non-911 emergency calls will be forwarded to on-call staff with the appropriate department.

🚛 Garbage routes will follow the normal schedule. Yard-waste and blue-week recycling collections will be delayed one day; Monday routes will be collected on Tuesday, and so on, with **Friday's blue-week recycling collected on Saturday, Sept. 12.

All landfill facilities will be closed on Sept. 7.

The 3RC EnviroStation will also be closed Saturday, Sept. 5, through Monday, Sept. 7.

The Public Art Commission's utility box project has created pockets of visual interest and beauty for the residents in the Boston-Thurmond neighborhood. The designs were selected by residents to reflect the history of the neighborhood and provide positive messaging.🎨

Due to extreme heat expected this week, Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) will offer free fixed-route bus service Sept. 1-3, 2026, to help residents access local cooling centers and find relief from the heat.

While bus shelters may provide temporary shade, WSTA encourages residents to seek indoor cooling centers during periods of extreme heat. Please ride safely and check on neighbors, friends, and family who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness.
