At a recent board meeting we honored Mr. Eddie Harry Jr., Healy Towers resident and president of its Resident Council. Despite some health issues including surviving two heart attacks, Mr. Harry is an inspiration.
A Navy veteran, father and grandfather, Mr. Harry lives by the following quote from an unknown person:
"Seriously, be strong and know when enough is enough. Take your stand, speak up and refuse to let others hurt you. Throughout your lifetime some people will discredit you, disrespect you and treat you poorly for apparently no reason at all. Don't consume yourself with trying to change them or win their approval. And don't make any space in your heart to hate them. You don't have control over what others think about you, but you do have control over how you decide to internalize their opinions. Leave them to their own judgments. Let people love you for who you are, and not for who they want you to be. Or let them walk away if they choose. They can't harm you either way. It's their understanding that is faulty, not yours." (Credit: inspiringandpositivequotes.com)

It was a glorious day as we celebrated the groundbreaking of Phases 2 and 3 of the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative! Construction on 114 modern, energy efficient apartments begins soon, continuing the transformation of the old Cleveland Avenue Homes into the new community of Legacy Heights.

As the Cleveland Avenue Hornes community continues moving forward through the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI), stories of compassion, strength, and resilience remind us what real community is all about.
Stephanie, who has lived here for almost a year, has already made a meaningful difference among her neighbors in the row.
Not long ago, Stephanie bought a new car that means much more to her than just having reliable transportation. For Stephanie, that car represents freedom, gratitude, and faith. It's a blessing she doesn't take for granted. She knows what it feels like to be without a car, a home, and support. Those difficult experiences taught her the power of kindness, and now she uses her own blessings to lift others up.
On most days, you'll find Stephanie giving neighbors rides to medical appointments, picking up their prescriptions, or taking them to local food pantries. Her two dogs, Blue and Sasha, are always close by, keeping her company as she moves through her day. Stephanie's care extends beyond people too. She's known to look after stray animals in the neighborhood, feeding them and even nursing some back to health. She believes that everyone, even the most helpless among us, deserves to be cared for.
"I just remember how hard it was when I didn't have anyone," Stephanie said. "Now that I'm in a better place, it only feels right to give back. We're all going through changes right now, and the best thing we can do is help each other."
Stephanie may not have the means to help everyone across Cleveland Avenue Homes, but her spirit of service inspires others to step up and do what they can. Her story reminds us that small acts of kindness like sharing a meal, offering a ride, or simply checking in on a neighbor can make a big difference.

At our last board meeting, we honored ASPIRE resident Calvin Fluitt, an inspiration to many.

Calvin, 72, was raised in the church and at the age of 17, went to work as a brick mason for his father. Unfortunately, Calvin fell into a years-long addiction to alcohol, lost his job, and found work cleaning liquor houses. Finally, he attempted to take his own life by drinking. He landed in the hospital, where he decided he wanted to live and turn his life around. He sought help from ARCA, completed its NA/AA program, and within three months was back on his feet with a job as a brick mason, a place to live, and a vehicle to drive.

Calvin never drank again and in the years since, he has helped establish NA/AA meetings around the city, including at Crystal Towers, where he has lived the last 9 years. He also partners with Hosanna House of Transition, Bethesda Center, and local churches to help others.

Thank you, Calvin, for all you do for the community!

Here at ASPIRE, we are all about cheering on our residents in their goals to improve their lives. At our October board meeting, we celebrated Denisha McDowell, a 37-year-old Piedmont Park resident who is a shining example of perseverance and purpose.
Denisha, who did not finish high school, felt it was important to be a good role model for her daughter, who is in 8th grade. She made the courageous decision to return to school at Forsyth Tech to earn her Adult High School Diploma. Not content to stop there, she has been working toward an associate’s degree and is scheduled to graduate in spring 2026 with a major in criminal justice. Her aspiration is to become a criminal defense attorney.
Denisha is driven by a deep determination, discipline, and a belief in second chances. She continues to inspire those around her with her personal motto: “From black sheep to the G.O.A.T.”
Congratulations, Denisha!
