WSPD RESPONDS TO DOWNTOWN DISTURBANCES INVOLVING JUVENILES
The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) responded to multiple incidents last night between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. involving large groups of juveniles moving throughout the downtown area. Reported activity included fights, illegal drug activity, underage alcohol consumption, and the possession of a firearm.
At approximately 7:45 pm last night, officers began conducting proactive security checks in response to a large gathering in the areas of North Liberty Street, Sixth Street, Trade Street, and Seventh Street. Throughout the evening, officers responded to numerous calls for service related to these gatherings.
Kharean Marie Shannon, 18, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver ma*****na, maintaining a vehicle for the use, keeping, or selling of a controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle for the use, keeping, or selling of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park, possession of ma*****na paraphernalia, and resisting, delaying, and obstructing a public officer. Ms. Shannon appeared before a magistrate and received an unsecured bond of $5,000.
Jeremiah Isaiah Williams, 20, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver ma*****na, carrying a concealed gun, possession of ma*****na paraphernalia, and maintaining a vehicle for the use, keeping, or selling of a controlled substance. Mr. Williams appeared before a magistrate and received an unsecured bond of $2,500.
Wendy Mares-Saucedo, 21, was cited for careless and reckless driving.
Dalevon Patrick Crockett-Bess, 19, was cited for loud music, a violation of city ordinance.
Joseph Gause, 19, was charged with open container and underage alcohol consumption.
While monitoring the crowd, officers observed a physical altercation between Prince Nasir Allen, 19, and Dakor Jykeem Sumler, 20, in their presence. To quickly restore order, officers deployed department-issued OC spray (pepper spray).
Mr. Allen was arrested and charged with simple affray, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct, and resisting a public officer. He appeared before a magistrate and received an unsecured bond of $2,500.
Mr. Sumler was arrested and charged with simple affray, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct, and resisting a public officer. He appeared before a magistrate and was held without bond.

The Winston-Salem Police Department remains committed to holding individuals accountable when laws are violated. WSPD staff will be presenting potential curfew options to City officials next week and are working with downtown businesses to ensure trespassing signage is properly posted to deter unlawful gatherings on private property.
“I responded to the downtown area last night and witnessed these events firsthand,” said Chief William H. Penn, Jr. “The continued pattern of this behavior is concerning. The recovery of a firearm in a crowded environment involving alcohol and drug use significantly increased the potential for serious harm. We remain committed to enforcing the law and taking appropriate action to maintain public safety.”
