The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages. Nationally, employment in medical support careers is projected to grow 15% from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Led by our instructors – Patty Watson, Becky Korder, and Brenda Edwards – Southeast Technical’s Medical Support Careers program is contributing to the education of future profes
sionals in this rewarding career field. We provide challenging hands-on experiences to help prepare our students for employment in a variety of nonclinical medical career opportunities, including:
-Medical Secretary
-Medical Transcriptionist
-Medical Coding Specialist
-Health Unit Coordinator
Students learn transcription of medical documents utilizing correct punctuation and capitalization emphasizing number, abbreviation, symbol, and metric measurement rules. HIPAA guidelines are discussed, recognizing patients' rights to protect their medical information. Successful graduates possess invaluable skills such as ability to key accurate, detailed, personal information relating to each patient's medical, surgical, psychiatric, social, and family history. As students gain competence in their work, they will advance to more critical thinking problem solving. Students may begin fall or spring semester and may attend full time or part time. Our programs are offered at the college's Winona, MN, campus. In addition, Medical Secretary and Medical Coding Specialist programs can be taken 100% online.
