Last night in front of a packed room at the Midlands Technical College Fairfield Campus 11 students graduated from the first EMT class to be held in Fairfield County in 7 years. We are proud to say that 5 of the graduates are a part of Fairfield County Fire Service. There were many words of encouragement and wisdom shared with the group that will surely ring true throughout their careers . Thank you to Chief of EMS Tim Martin and Deputy Chief of Clinical Services Patrick Dineen and everyone else who helped bring this much needed program back to Fairfield County.

SCFC to lift burning ban for 7 more counties Thursday

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission will lift the State Forester's Burning Ban for an additional seven counties, effective at 7 a.m., Thursday, April 30.

Agency officials believe the combination of rain and elevated relative humidity stretching from the Midlands to the Upstate warrant removing Edgefield, Fairfield, Newberry, Lexington, McCormick, Richland and Saluda counties from outdoor burning restrictions.

Twenty-seven counties remain subject to the ban, however, highlighting the elevated fire danger that remains in a majority of the state (see map at right).

“We’re seeing relative humidities increase across the state each day as well as good RH recovery overnight, which raises the moisture level in finer forest fuels,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “Sustained winds and gusts are lower too, and the prospect of even more rain across greater portions of the state over the next week could help us get out of what has been an extended period of fire danger this year.”

Citizens who may plan to conduct outdoor burning of residential yard debris or prescribed burns in counties not subject to the burning ban must still notify the Forestry Commission before doing so:

Residential yard debris burning
State law requires citizens who live in unincorporated areas to notify the Forestry Commission before burning outdoors. In most cases, the law applies to burning leaves, limbs and branches that people clean up from their yards. Citizens who do live in city/town limits must still abide by any burning ordinances in their local jurisdictions.
Citizens can make notification online by visiting scfc.gov/notify or by calling the toll-free notification number for the county in which they live, found here: scfc.gov/protection/fire-burning/how-to-notify/.

Prescribed burning
State law requires that you notify the Forestry Commission before burning for forestry, wildlife management or agricultural purposes. This includes burning for wildfire hazard reduction, brush control, endangered species management, wildlife habitat improvement, plant disease control, crop residue removal and preparation of land for planting trees or agricultural crops. All burning for forestry, wildlife and agriculture must comply with SC Smoke Management Guidelines. To make notification, regardless of county, please call (800) 777-3473.

It has been a busy April at Fairfield Fire. We hosted an inhouse Fire Officer 1 class that 4 of our members completed successfully. This was taught by Instructor Caleb LeGrand and evaluated by the SC Fire Academy. We then hosted Leadership in Supervision: Creating Environments for Professional Growth, which is a 2 day National Fire Academy class. We had a full class including 2 of our members. We completed the final inspection on 2 new tankers. If you saw our trucks congregated with hose on the ground, we tested over 16,000 feet of 5" supply hose as part of our annual hose testing program. We also participated in the Blair Day Parade.

Fire Officer 1: This course is designed to take the student to the NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 1 level. The class consists
of instructor presentations, class discussions and interactive learning activities to prepare the student for the fire
officer position within their department. Subjects include: Supervising personnel, assigning tasks, solving
personnel performance problems, applying department policies, working with the local community, ensuring
firefighter safety, fire and life safety inspections, performing typical company officer administrative functions are
addressed in the program. Out-of-class reading and assignments will be necessary to complete the course.
Students who successfully complete the course will receive an accredited certificate from IFSAC and an application
for a ProBoard accredited certificate for NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I.

Leadership in Supervision: Creating Environments for Professional Growth: This 2-day course presents the supervisor with the basic leadership skills and tools needed to perform effectively in the fire and emergency medical services (EMS) environment. The course includes concepts related to a successful transition to supervisory and leadership roles, including concepts of adaptive leadership; change management; active followership; effective communication, including difficult conversations and advocacy-inquiry-based dialogue; ethics; authority; power; decision-making; and active engagement through development of a personal plan.

Last week we got to do the final inspection on our two new Tankers at the Pierce Manufacturing Facility in Bradenton Florida. Once they arrive, a 1982 and a 1984 Tanker will be coming out of service. The two new Tankers are identical to the one we received last year which enhances operation efficiency. Tankers are an important part of our operations due to the large amount of our County without hydrants. One of the new Tankers will be housed at our Greenbrier Station and one at our River Road Station .
